February 28

Friday night I watched Bill Moyer's Journal and his conversation with my hero, linguist John McWhorter. I have been wondering how John feels about a black president. Moyer asked him. He is happy beyond what I expected him to say. Lea does not agree with some of his suppositions about the history of English.

I like McWhoter bc I agree with what he says. Last night he was talking about the need for child care. Something like 70% or 80% of black babies are born to unwed mothers.

Saturday morning 11 am. We leave for Ft Woof as soon as I get dressed. I want to make a library run before it closes at 2 PM. I need a fresh supply of books.
I was dreaming that I was a dancer trying to get into Cuba. Why in? Barbara Parker really got me into Havana of 2003. When we were courting, Frank promised over and over to take me to Havana. Alas, we never got there.

Acai (ah sigh ee) juice tastes like chocolate. It is most satifying to me.

We only stayed for half an hour at the park, even tho we were enjoying chatting with Ken and Judy. The wind was horrendous, 25 mph. Temp was forty six and real feel 36. We are going to have a frost tonight and tomorrow night. Not normal.

Took a long, long nap. Got up and watching Lawrence Welk show on KERA. Lady Chica stands around wagging her tail, wanting us to take a shower.

I cannot imagine this, but Discover Card has twice sent me a packet of checks for $1000 each. Amid the economic meltdown. Who says you cant get credit?

BOOK REVIEW

Eyeshot is as far as the eye can see. Protagonist, Sonia, is homicide detective in Cincinnati.

Up and out as soon as possible. I stopped at Town Talk for dog food and was carried away with soy milk, acais berry juice, and lots of cheese. Also humus. Lady Chica loves brie, actually begs for it. She smelled the pkg when I put it in the car. The park was chilly, just enuf to energize the dogs. I would never have caught LC if a park employee had not helped me. If somebody comes toward her, she runs to me for shelter.

Off to spend the afternoon with Ruth, going over family papers.

I had a brief case full of copies of papers. Ruth is in heaven. We played on the computer at ancestry.com. I came home and slept for a long, long time.

Up at 9 am. I need some Gatorade --- maybe a banana shake. I sweated thru four night shirts last night. Need potassium.

Spent the morning sewing and listening to NPR. Bored with today's ideas. I took an early nap before the landscapers arrived. They are trimming bushes today.

Made a Kroger run. Then took another nap. Finally went to the dog park. Fortunately the motorsickles were just leaving. I need to get Blitzen under control or give him away. He almost pulls me over. He is fine until he sees a motorcycle. Then he goes beserk.

Lady Chica found a mud hole. The problem with mud is that it is clay. One has to scrub it off.

BOOK REVIEW
C.J. Box, *Three Weeks to Say Goodbye*
I had been looking forward to the next novel written by Box, but I dont think I can read this. His stand alone novels are violent, usually involving children. The plot of this book bothers me. Jack and melissa have adopted a newborn. Nine months later the father shows up demanding the child. I peeked at the last chapter. The protagonist is in prison for a year or so.

Bill Crider, *A Knife in the back*
Crider is (or was) an English prof at Alvin Community College in Alvin, TX, the home town of Nolan Ryan. His books are hilarious spoofs. This is the Sally Cooper series. Sally is head of the dept of English at Hughes Community College. Classic mystery.

I am not sleepy but I dont want to get up. The president's speech last night seemed to me surreal. It may have been the experience of watching hidef telly. And then the governor's speech was surreal, too.

Th Dog Whisperer teaches tht dogs need to work for their food. They need to take a walk before eating. DW should meet Lady Chica. Her job consists of parking the cars at the dog park.

My comments on Michigan garner many reponses. Readers from WI, MT and Alaska want to substitute their comments, everything but Vernor. One reader sold Bibles in a town in Indiana (near MI) where a lady proclaimed their town had 5 churches 5 saloons and 5 beauty parlors.

Lea called. She has a fever and is calling off PPQS. So I took dogs to park. It is hot. I finally understand how it is that before the crash I was getting daily requests to take out another credit card. Banks were bundling them and selling them somehow. Just like the mortgages.

Attended AA speaker meeting tonight. Primary Purpose has the same step speakers every month. Jimmy D was here in Feb 2008. As he talked I remembered his story. One hour sitting about killed me.

BOOK REVIEW
Barbara Parker, *Suspicion of Rage*
Back to Gail and Anthony. They are married now. They decide to take their blended kids and visit Anthony's sister in Cuba. Anthony was thirteen when he left Cuba. The sister never left. Anthony's fa was a hero decorated by Castro. In order to visit Cuba, people fly to Mexico and go in from there.

Up at 5 am for a pit stop. Had an exciting idea. I am redoing a photo album of old family pics. I can find the person in my family tree and print off a page. Ancestry.com even turns on my printer.

Back to bed and up at 7:30 in order to get to Baptist Center. This was the slowest day ever and I have worked there since June 2007. Somehow I expected things to increase with economic slowdown. I dont think we have felt it much here.

Back home for a nap and then massage. My back is in much better shape. Finally got to the dog park at 5:30. You can bet it was warm today if I was there as the sun was setting wearing shirt sleeves. 7 PM I am so sleepy. I want to stay up to hear the president speak.

BOOK REVIEW
Barbara Parker, *Blood Relations*
Stand alone novel. Not part of a series. Sam is a prosecuting attorney in Dade County, Miami. he is prosecuting a rape case when witness and defendent are murdered, shot. This was hard to get into bc there are so many characters. And you cant believe who the shooter is. I was amazed.

9:44 AM Fire Marshall has come and gone. The crazy old lady mgr is accompanied by two reasonable maintenance men. The marshall walked in and hit smoke alarm and walked out. Dogs are in the car waiting to go to park.

I know I go to pieces and I am neurotic. I had a lot of problems the first year I lived here. The lady mgr would come inspect by herself and found all kinds of things wrong. Some were real and some weren't. Anyhow, off to the park.

This is funny. I went outside and the neighbors were chatting. Marilyn and Oda Mae were complaining that they did all this tidying of clutter and the fire marshall never looked at anything.

I called Judy and coordinated our visit to the dog park. Then we were joined by Gracie's mom, alas. The park was medium comfortable. Now for a nap. I can barely walk.

Came home and slept for a long time. not much on the telly tonight. The dogs are asleep. They got some exercise today. Laid out my clothes for tomorrow.

BOOK REVIEW
Robin Marantz Henig *A Dancing Matrix --- Voyages Along the Viral Frontier*
This book is all about viruses. It explains what a virus is. A virus is not alive. It has either DNA or RNA and must get into a living cell to reproduce.
The theme of the book is that new diseases are the result of "emerging viruses" Viruses are mostly not mutating. [The flu virus makes little changes every year but it is still the flu. And a virus may go from one species to another.] More and more we are going where no man has gone before and finding a virus there. The AIDS virus has probably been around for one hundred years. One suggestion is that it has been around America for a long time. One reason it was not recognized is that people were sick all the time anyhow. Only when other diseases had been cleared up did AIDS become visible.

Washington's birthday under new calendar.

Turned off alarm and got up at eleven. Now past noon. My back muscles hurt from my activity yesterday. At this point I dont care about the fire marshal inspector. If I can manage to get my jeans on, I think we will go to the dog park.
I am enjoying my new telly. I love it. Unfortunately it takes my attention.

I keep wondering what Caeser Milan would do with Blitzen. Blitzen would fit in nicely. I have seen Blitzen join a pack of big dogs. If Blitzen gets enuf exercise he is fine. Caesar could have him pulling Caesar on a skateboard.

We had a lovely time at the dog park, staying almost two hours. Judy came by and I saw Prof Chambers briefly. I can barely walk. As one ages, one's muscles do not rebound.

Came home and took a nap. I am a little better. By Wednesday I should be fine. No arthritis. Just muscles. The problem with aging is muscle reboudn, or lack thereof.

BOOK REVIEW
Abraham Verghese, *My Own Country*
Reads like a novel but is true account of a doctor in the early AIDS epidemic, 1983-89. Dr. Verghese is a Christian Indian emigrant to US. His ancestors in India were converted by St. Thomas, one of the apostles. (I had never heard of this. I knew Xtian communities in Ethiopia etc.) After his residency as an internal medicine specialist, he worked for a VA hospital and retirement home in Tennessee, with one day a week at a local hospital. One by one the first AIDS patients came to his hospital.

During this same time I knew Carole D who worked in Houston for an internal medicine specialist. So I knew about the AIDS epidemic as it happened. I was interested from a demographic point of view. The CDC defined AIDS by a series of opportune infections. See *And the Band Played On*

Up at 11 am. Feeling rested. I have fabric piled on my kitchen work table. I hope fire marshal does not think this is a fire hazard.

I have not done anything today. Took a nap. Decided not to go to the park. I thot it would be easier to walk in the field across the street. Wro-o-ong. I let the dogs go on their double leash. They took off and my knee went out. I was feeling hopeless when Blitzen came around again. He does that, teasing me. Chica put on the brakes and I stepped on the leash. Then we came home.

BOOK REVIEW
Caesar Milan, *_A Member of the Family*
This book is written for people just getting a dog. I have found it interesting and to some degree helpful. Caesar is all for dogs in bed with you. He says that sleeping together is more intimate than sex. When one is asleep one is totally vulnerable. Trust.
Caesar writes about custody of a dog in a divorce case. Caesar is gung ho on having a pack. Dogs need a pack.

Martha, why do you forbid Rocky the bed?

That joke about the cold is wrong. I remember walking to catch the school bus at 30 below zero. The air was crisp. We had two days in a row that winter.

7 AM Up to turn up the heat and put on a sweat shirt. Having breakfast. Back to bed.

10 AM I feel a trifle concerned about sleeping so much but I wake feeling rested down to my bones. Sun is shining. More housework. Temp is 53 going up to 65. (Actually it went up to 73.) Michigan is in for another heavy snow storm over the weekend.

I have one fourth of the kitchen mopped. This is the part of the kitchen with droppings dried on. I have to scrape. Allen called with a genuine vato on the phone.

I took a nap and then off to Ft. Woof. Not much happenin there. Lady Chica was frightened by a big dog on the other side of the fence. She did not trust the fence. We came home and the dogs ricocheted around the house. I have half the kitchen floor mopped, the worst half.

BOOK REVIEW

10 am and the sun is shining. I have to include the following. Forgive me.

COLD IS A RELATIVE THING. .
65 above zero:
Floridians turn on the heat.
People in Michigan plant gardens.

60 above zero:
Californians shiver uncontrollably.
People in Michigan sunbathe.

People in Michigan drive with the windows down..

40 above zero:
Georgians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats.
People in Michigan throw on a flannel shirt.

35 above zero:
New York landlords finally turn up the heat.
People in Michigan have the last cookout before it gets cold.

20 above Zero
People in Miami all die.
Michiganders close the windows.

Zero:
Californians fly away to Mexico .
People in Michigan get out their winter coats.

10 below zero:
Hollywood disintegrates.
The Girl Scouts in Michigan are selling cookies door to door.

20 below zero:
Washington DC runs out of hot air.
People in Michigan let the dogs sleep indoors.

30 below zero:
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
Michiganders get upset because they can't start the Snow-mobile.

40 below zero):
ALL atomic motion stops .
People in Michigan start saying...'Cold enough fer ya?'

50 below zero:
Hell freezes over.
Michigan public schools will open 2 hours late

I am listening to NPR. Some sociologist has declared a third chapter of development: 50 to 75. I guess I am into chapter four. Always on the cutting edge.

Trying to nap on Thursday is an exercise in futility with the landscape people blowing leaves. the dogs go berserk. We went to dog park 4:30. The motorsikle cops were just leaving, thank goodness. They set up obstacles in the parking lot and practice synchronized swimming. (That was a joke.) Blitzen starts digging out under the fence. Smaller dogs escape in his holes.
Lady Chica goes crazy racing the fence. I truly think she gets crazy. Finally a nice young man climbed the fence from the big dog park and helped me catch her. She really was tired and ready to come home.
I am sleepy. May take an early nap. 8 PM

BOOK REVIEW

Tuesday night I watched Frontline and a documentary on The Economic Meltdown. I understand it a little better. We were in Puerto Vallarta when Lehman Bros went bankrupt and Gloria was watching CNN.
I remember ads for a fifty year mortgage. That is what put Lehman Bros under. Why is Las Vegas the center of the foreclosure problem?
************************
Why are people making death threats to the PR firm representing the octuplets? It makes no sense to me.

9 AM Wednesday. Sun is shining. I am sleeping better. I wake feeling refreshed. My little girl barked and barked and barked until I got up and got her breakfast.

Then I took a nap. Kerry at Arlington Oaks took me out for lunch. Actually, her fiance, Russel, took her and me and her mother, her daughter and her uncle all out to lunch. I haven't seen Kerry for a while and we were catching up.
Then I came home and took another nap. Tonight was PPQS. Lea made a home made pizza and cole slaw. She was sewing on a pajama set for her grand daughter. I was working on our scrap book for Puerto Vallarta.
And so it goes.
My sister wanted to know why I said good night to Mark. Mark is a man who sits at our table at church luncheon. He would like to receive my journall before he goes to bed. Altho I really dont understand why. He drives all night. (He drives long distance trucks.) He hit some elk last week. They overran him.

Yes, Brandy, the number one on list of intelligent dogs was border collie. I think they are more obedient. I think they have been working with humans, one on one, for so long that they have adapted. I think they were first noticed in 1400.
They are probably a mix of Roman war dog and Viking dogs.
I wish I knew what mix Blitzen is. Vet says beagle and terrier. He has some herding dog I think. I also think I would describe him as a mini rotweiller.

Tuesday morning
Woke up wondering where I am. On the way to the computer I misplaced my coffee. Found it. Off to Baptist Center.

Baptist Center: only 7 food families so far. Slow day. Lousy weather.

At the food pantry I got a fruit cake in the shape of Texas and it is piquante. Amazing!!!!

Took a nap. Dog park 4 PM to 5 PM. Lady Chica managed to find a mud hole, but she did wait at the gate for me when she saw me coming with my tote bag. Not many dogs. Audry came with Elvis, a great big dog like a Newfoundland or something. he got into a ruckus with Charlie, Ray's little dachsund.

I am going to wach tv this eveining. Nova at seven. something about dinosaurs. And so, goodnight Mark.

5:30 AM I slept for five or six hours. Feeling rested. My muscles feel rested. Drank a cup of coffee. That seems to help. Only my big toe hurts. I have so many ideas for sewing projects, so little time. I am still hemming shirts.

9 am Woke up. Everything looks so cozy this morning. I am feeling cozy.

Lady Chica inherits intelligence. List of dogs with intelligence. No 6 is Shetland Sheep Dog. (LC's mother) and No. 10 is heeler. (LC's father). Intelligence is defined as learning command after three repititions. Well, LC knows the command but does she obey? She was the star of her puppy class, only needed one repitition but would not do anything at home.

I took a nap and we went off to the dog park. Dogs were bored. Nothing much happenin. A mounted policeman took his horse for exercise. Then Judy turned up and we chatted. At the park 2:15 to 3:30.

I took a nap. 6:37 PM I guess it is almost Mark's bedtime. So here goes.

Accuweather Arthritis Index was "Very High"

I must say that the sermon was not inspiring. It was stewardship Sunday. The subject was tithing. Had lunch with Margie, Bette, Ron and Mark Farmer. Mark is so funny. Mark: even the homeless getting sack lunches at Baptist Center tease me.

I took a nap and then we were off to the dog park. Many dogs on Sunday. Lady Chica hung around me. Actually came up to be petted. Medium chilly. I wore my ski jacket.

Came home and slept until 8 PM. so I am off track timewise. Had an email request for tonight's journall bc it is bedtime.

Up at 8:30 AM. I had a bad night, until I thot of sleeping with my foot elevated. I kept getting up and walking around. I intend to sit around hemming my shirts and listening to NPR. One of my readers has an image of me sitting at the keyboard writing with one hand and hemming with the other.

My string quilt is off to Michigan. I am sending it to Gladys. She said that Steve was looking forward to getting it and she would like it as a remembrance.

Took a nap. 2PM and off to the dog park. Warm sunny day. Everybody in shirt sleeves.

Well, somehow I dawdle around and it was 3 before we arrived and we stayed until 4:30. Lots of cars and buses for Lady Chica to park. College girls softball tournament it looked like. Buses had names on the sides, coming from Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Came home and took a nap. Then it was time to eat. I have spent the evening watching Channel 13 while I hemmed. Saw Bill Moyers. I am so enjoying Channel 13.

Lincoln's Birthday

Lincoln's Birthday
Old Age is a kind of exile. I was listening on NPR to a story of refugees from North Korea living in China or South Korea. They are homesick for North Korea. (See this month's issue of National Geographic.)
As one ages, the culture changes. It feels like a different planet. One's friends and family die. One longs for a time space than no longer exists.

So much for angst. Thursday morning. This morning my muscles are sore from that wild exercise yesterday. Irony.

I went back to bed for a nap, getting up at ten. I quickly ate mac and cheese for bkfast and dashed over to show the girls at Stitchintime my string quilt completed. 10:45 and everybody had gone home. Disappointed I wandered home, encountering Mildred and Marilyn. Mildred said the stitchers had worked until eleven. But it is not yet eleven I said, looking at my watch. My watch read: 11:45. Now it is noon plus sixteen.
Now I need to get over to Kroger for some rug doctor. Should I let the doglets ride along?

The doglets rode along and then we went to the dog park. Judy was coming in from her long walk just as we arrived. Judy and I talked about Obama's press conference, the secy of treasury's boring speech, the octuplets. The story of the octuplets is beyond fiction.

I had my lunch and plan to nap. 4:25 PM

I napped until 6:45 PM. How did I need so much sleep? I got up and snacked for dinner. Watched McNeil Lehrer news report on my beautiful new HD television..

No book review. I have been reading articles about Darwin. And modern theories of evolution. I am fascinated that we have the same genes as mice, about 21,000. The differences among species has to do with genes which turn on and off. The giraffe has neck genes which apparently got stuck in ON position.

Letters to editor in AARP magazine are talking about DNA which is the same for all humans. HA. We are the same as all animals down to the mice.

Kevin writes:
In spite of all assurances that the libraries aren't going out of
business, you're apparently still very worried subconsciously.
Actually, exporting redundant librarians could represent an example of
the new way of doing things Obama has been talking about, but frankly I
think it would be far more beneficial for the country if bankers,
lawyers and congressmen were exported rather than librarians (or
Liberians). The developing countries are already used to recycling our
waste, so maybe we could send a couple hundred barge loads of these
suited nuisances to be recycled into something beneficial to humankind.
Dog food comes to mind, but that's just my initial thought. Explain to
your dogs I'm only joking and mean no offense to them :-) .

Another gentle reader writes:
dr m, i know what you mean. The other day i heard that the govt was cracking
down on allowing guatemalans being allowed into the country, and i immediately started
wondering what alternates could be used to make that wonderful dip at the mexican
restaurants. Ron finally told me that it was guacamole. i just hope the govt does not
find out about them.

Amendment:
Martha wants it clearly understood that Jeff is taking a dance class with Martha. They are taking a beginner's class in ballroom dancing at TCU.

I fixed the color in the tv. Apparently the tv must be turned on first and then the little box.

I got up and ate breakfast at 4 AM. Then back to bed until 8:30 AM. I am going to exercise in our club house on site.

We watched a video. We sat and raised our arms and raised our legs. Stretching. I could use all that. I came home and took a nap.
We went to the vet at 3:30 PM. Blitzen checked out fine. I asked the vet about esterus. She said bitches can be in season for three weeks.
Over to PPQS. Told John about Blitzen's adventure. When John was seven he took his dog with him to the post office and the dog got stuck on another dog. John pulled and pulled and could not get his dog loose. He had no idea what was happening.

I blathered on and on about everything I have heard on NPR all week. I finished my quilt. Now I will send it to Gladys.
This afternoon I recd a shipment from Fedex. I opened it this evening. A gift basket from Wine Country from Sherry, Frank's niece (Martha's cousin). A box full of boxes of chocolate candy. Wow. wow wow

I am working at the Baptist Center. Foggy this morning. People are coming more slowly and evenly. Only two requests for comedas at 9:45 AM

For some reason requests have been slow last week and this. Noon and I am home. So tired. Going to take a nap. It may rain later.

Yesterday I was reading CNN Online and I read that hundreds of librarians were being exported. Why, I wondered. Turns out it was Liberians who are being deported.

I took my nap and we made it to the dog park before the rain. The sky was dark. When I was ready to come home, Lady Chica was waiting by the gate. She was ready to come home. I lay down for another nap and here came Blitzen popping onto the bed with his raggytag. Wanting to play. I give up.

Made my first try at tv. It is so complex. I have two remotes, one for the box and one for the tv. I called Jeff who was on his way to dance class. I managed to get onto the channels. The color is off and the size of the picture. Well, tomorrow is another day.

Hemming while listening to Diane Reams on NPR. Discussion of the stimulus bill. Sun is coming out.

I took a nap. Went over to the dog park at two. Just as I arrived, Judy and Szabo arrived. We chatted away and suddenly it was 3:30. I came home and took another nap. Just as I woke up Ola Mae knocked at the door with a plate of beans and endive, a German dish. (Ola Mae cooks German a lot. her fa was German) I gobbled it up immediately.

Listened to Pres Obama's press conference. Sounded as if he were delivering a college lecture.

Martha and jeff came over to set up the tv. The dogs set up a clamor, and Ola Mae came out to see what was up. I appreciate that.
Well, the tv is beyond my wildest dreams. It is high definition. I must tell John and Lea that now I can watch Channel 13, PBS. Mystery. British comedies.

BOOK REVIEW
Dick Francis, *Shattered*
Dick Francis often writes books featuring a character who has a specialized occupation. In this case it is glass blowing. The hero's best friend is a jockey who is killed in a fall. He leaves a cassette which is the object of the plot. This was not one of Francis' best. I personally think Francis has been using ghost writers for years now.

One of my fears has been diminished if not vanished. Mrs. Chambers is a retired librarian. At the dog park, she reassured me that libraries don't close, they are more busy during hard times when people dont have money to buy books. Libraries may cut hours, cut staff, cut budgets for new acquisitions. But they remain.

Sunday morning. Another horrible night. My heel hurt. I decided I might as well get up and go to Sunday school.

Interesting class discussion. We are reading: Christianity Must Change or Die by John Spong. I skipped church. Came home and took dogs to the park. Then took a nap.

Martha picked me up at three. I chatted with Jeff as he cooked. Then I took a nap. We ate about seven. Martha and Jeff brot me home and hooked up my new tv. It is a High Definition with a converter box. convert to digital
I am tired tonight.

BOOK REVIEW
Mel Taylor, *Encounter by Deadline*
This is an interesting book. The main character is a TV reporter. He is the one you always see at the scene of the crime. He follows a police investigation of a Ponzi scheme involving diamonds. What is interesing - and indicative of culture change - is that the chief character is black but he never mentions his race. One picks up hints here and there. Nothing about black culture. John McWhorter would be proud of him.

2 am I woke up and thot it was morning.

8 AM I did wake up and it was morning. Going back to bed. I was dreaming that I was typing casualty lists in the Civil War.

. Had coffee. Helps circulation. I read an article in Psychology Today years ago claiming that every pain killer was a placebo, but that the individual had to believe that it worked. It was the belief.

ACAI BERRIES The FDA says that the efficacy of acai berries is questionable. Some doc on Oprah is touting the berries.

At noon we went off to the dog park. My dogs hit the ground running. For a while there was a small pack running on each side of the fence, five on each side. The weekend folks stood there in wonderment. Then the big dogs got in a squabble and it was over.

Eventually Blitzen HAD SEX right out there in front of everybody. I was so embarressed. Blitz and another dog had been pestering this small dog. People would pull Blitzen off and then pull the other dog off and then Blitzen and then the other dog. Eventually I went over to see what was going on. It was a little female. (I knew then there were pheronnomes.) I went to pull Blitzen off and he was stuck. He was stuck. Somebody on the big dog side shouted, "Throw water on them." So I did and it was over. The little dog had just been fixed, but I think there were still hormones. Furthermore, dogs are not receptive 24/7 like humans. They have to be in season. I think Blitzen was frightened more than anything.

I came home. Did some hemming. I was trying to take a nap. People were moving past with couch and chairs and whatnot. Eventually the dogs gave up bothering to bark. It was too boring. My neighbor, Jessie, has gone to assisted living. She has Alzheimer's. So her kin were moving her belongings out. We are all waiting to see who moves in. will she be compatible.

I think I took a nap. Sometimes I don't know if I have slept.

BOOK REVIEW
William Tapply, *A Void In Hearts*. Brady Coyne, Boston lawyer, occasionally hires Les, a private eye. Les is the victim of a hit and run. So Brady sets forth to find the killer. I did not read the end and the end was the most incredible I have yet met. The title: Les originally was a bridge pro. He started investigating card cheating. Hence "void in hearts"

_____________, *Close to the Bone* This may be a spoiler. A fellow defense lawyer fakes his death by drowing. Then he really is murdered. I peeked at the end.

___________________, *Muscle Memory* Brady is a divorce lawyer, retained by a retired pro basketball player. Then the player is charged with the murder of his estranged wife. Surprise ending but I had peeked.

I was ready to go home when Dr and Mrs Chambers showed up and we chatted. We like to chat about religion and politics.
I am making semi-smores in the microwave for dessert. The Food Pantry gave me marshmellows.

I squinted at the clock. had to don my glasses. It was only 8:20 am. And I was awake and feeling rested. Well, I got up. Decided to have baked brie for breakfast. Sun is shining. Temp will be in the seventies today. Food Bank day.

Baked brie did not satisfy me as a breakfast food. dashed over to food bank at Senior center. I weigh myself there. I have lost a pound!!! Yeah. We were at dog park 12 to 1:30. Wind was blowing stiffly. Came home and slept for three hours. 6 PM and a page full of personal emails. Yeah.

Baked brie makes a wonder hor doerve. Does that mean snack? literally. Reading and hemming. Sleepy again. No pain today. Weird.

BOOK REVIEW
Philip Craig and william Tapply, *First LIght*
This is the first JW and brad Coyne novel. They compete in a fishing tournament. seek missing women. Find a serial killer. Least likely suspect. I peeked at the last chapter.

February 5

11:00 am I love to be able to look at the clock and go back to sleep. Dick H reports that he sets his alarm every night so that he can have the pleasure of turning it off and going back to sleep. Sun is shining. Pleasant day.

I went over to the beauty parlor onsite to make an appointment and found that May was between appointments. So I got my hair cut immediately. Then we took off for the park. Not too many people there. Beautiful day. Almost hot in the sun. Stopped at Town Talk on the way home.
Alas the last hamburger is gone, as are the tamales. Alas.

Took a long nap. Leta invited me over for dinner. As usual we had a great talk.

Libertarians: The taxpayers will not have to pay for the octuplets. The mother is contemplating a book deal and a movie deal.

BOOK REVIEW:
Barbara Parker, *The Dark of Day*
Novel of suspense. Defense attorney J.C. Dunn in Miami defends celebrities. A large part of her job is manipulating the media. A girl is missing and Dunn is hired to keep the media away from a congressman. One of the suspects is the congressman's driver.

Tuesday evening. The dogs have not moved a muscle tonight. Well, Lady Chica did open one eye to see what I was doing.

Wed morning. No pain. Good sleep. I dont understand how this works. Mon nite was horrible. Tuesday nite was pain free.

Five definitions of vato. Two URLs about slang. Three individuals know personally people who use the term. One reader, a mgr, says "I supervise enuf vatos to populate Juarez". The term means "dude", with sort of gang membership -----

Somebody also mentioned Vato Loco, meaning crazy gangster.

I spent the morning sewing on my string quilt. I am finishing the binding. Listening to NPR. Did some shopping at Walmart. It is so exhausting to find anything there. Am about to take off for PPQS (my evening with Lea).

We discussed linguistics. NPR had a rerun of McWhorter pushing his book. Lea did some machine quilting along the border of my quilt. So sleepy.

BOOK REVIEW
Phillip Craig, *Vineyard Chill*
This is the final book by Phillip Craig. he died in May 2007. Actually I liked this the best of his books. Vinyard books are one of a kind, sort of PI with mystery with travelogue.

I came home from the library with a bag of books by William Tapply.

Journall Feb 3, Tuesday

Writing this at Baptist Center. We have served 12 people for groceries, mostly single people. Fewer sack lunches bc people are working temp at Stock Show. Stock Show is not doing so well this year according to my informant.

I arrived home at noon half dead. Yet the dogs insisted we go to Ft Woof NOW. They even said it, NOW, NOW, NOW. We were there 2:00 to 3:30 PM. Perfect day. The dogs had fun running the fence with big dogs. One big dog owner came over to the fence to thank me for giving her dogs some exercise. (See pictures of fence etc. I sit at the table and read. Some people come by and chat.)

I could barely stand up as we came home and I took a nap until 6:30. I have been on the computer for more than an hour. Lots of emails today.

Does anybody speak Tex Mex? The Tres Navarre novels take place in San Antonio, TX, and Tres' buddy calls him "vato". I even looked in Wicktionary under Spanish. No such palabre.

BOOK REVIEW:
Philip Craig, *Murder At a Vinyard Mansion*.
Mr. Craig saved paragraphs in his computer and used them over and over again. The action is not so hot in this book, but it contains a great deal of history about "old families" on the Vinyard. An unlikely number of people are half siblings.

Phillip Craig and William Tapply, *Second Sight*
Tapply has his series hero, Brady Coyne, go down to the vinyard to visit J.W. Jackson, the Craig series hero. In both this and Third Strike the duo conbat terrorism. Celebrities come to the island.

Journall Feb 2

Now I have a new worry. What if they shut down the libraries? What would I do w/o a library? I couldn't buy enuf books. I could not afford to buy a book a day even at Half Price books.

Monday morning 8:30 am. The week begins. Vehicles begin moving around. The dogs get particularly upset with maintenance man's golf cart. I am going back to bed for a nap. Martha has asked me to spend the afternoon at her house waiting for a pkg to be delivered.

An exercise machine was scheduled to be delivered between noon and five. So I waited all afternoon. Rocky and I took naps. I read. Jeff came home at five and I scampered to NU2U resale shop where Leta was volunteering (and invited me to dinnr on Thur). I resisted temptation. I saw a purse I wanted but I have a purse in black, brown, tan, red, white and purple. plus the denim I carry everyday.

The shipment arrived at 5:15. I nibbled all afternoon on leftover snacks from the Superbowl party. Now I need a nap.

Gobbled up all the potato salad Jeff sent home with me. Lady Chica is feeling playful tonight. She tried to coax Blitzen into playing catch with her. When that failed she tipped over the waste baskets and scattered paper all over.

BOOK REVIEW
Rick Riordan, *The Last King of Texas*
The last king is King of the Carnival Rides. series: Tres Navarre has a PhD in English but works as a PI. (I know the feeling of cant find a job. ) In this book he becomes part time at UTSA. Two professors are killed, one after the other. Tres takes replacement.

Ranting and Raving

I have decided to rant and rave here bc I wont hurt anybody's feelings, let's hope.
I have just received another of those emails about the good old days.
Here is what the thirties were like:
There was a bad Depression and unemployment was 25 percent.
Families did not stay together. Men deserted families bc they could not support them.
My aunt abandoned her baby at her mother's house. She came to visit one day and left the baby.
My grandmother was pregnant unwed at sixteen in about 1886.
My great grandmother had an illegitimate child who became my grandmother. I have a gap in my family tree.
During the depression there was a high rate of alcoholism.

SMOKING MARIJUANA WAS LEGAL. PEOPLE SMOKED IT TO CURE ASTHMA.

People died of infection bc there were no anti-biotics.
All in all these are the Good New Days.

Journall Feb 1, 2009

Subject: Journall Sunday February 1, 2009

10:00 AM The alarm rang and I turned it off. Saving my strength for the dog park. I was up at 3 am taking a hot shower. I cant stop the arthritis but I can keep from seizing up. Sun is shining. temp is 50 degrees going up to 65.
Called Gladys, Steve's widow, and we talked for an hour.
Watched the Superbowl ads. That lizard one is just too much. When does the game start?
Game starts at 5:30 PM. I was concerned it would interfere with the Holy Heretics at the dog park. We were there 2 PM to 4 PM. Beautiful day, perfect weather. Almost a meetup. besides Allen, Brenda and Elaine, we met Rick and Linda with angel and Prof Chambers from TCU. When we got home I asked Lady Chica if she had a good time and she wagged her tail. I think she liked the meetup.
So sleepy. guess I will take a nap. Betty D and Ruth think my journals are funny.
I started watching the Superbowl and was waked up. Then I saw a one hundred yard run. I did not think such a run was possible. And it was scored. Somehow I find myself rooting for the Steelers. And so it goes.
What a game!!! Miracles! And the Steelers won by a nose.
BOOK REVIEW
Philip Craig, *The Woman Who Walked Into the Sea*
Series hero, Jeff (JW) Jackson, is a retired ondisability cop who lives full time on Martha's Vinyard. In this book, the other characters are academics. (The author is a prof of lit) A retired prof and another academic are writing an article about a forgotten Shakespeare play.
*A Shoot on Martha's Vineyard*
The shoot is a movie. By now J.W. has married and has a child. I find this rather boring. He spends too much time being jealous.
