August 31, 2009

Our trash is picked up early in the morning and my dogs bark. I thot it was getting late when it was 8:30. Off we went to dog park. Temp was 68 degrees, delightfully cool. Met Judy and Szabo. We listened to Tula's owner who complains that he has to pay two million dollars in taxes every year. Poor man!!!
Met Judy at Wendy's. Once more we discussed families.

I heard Buffy StMarie sing Universal Soldier.

Lady Chica's Tale
Ran my tail off this morning. It was cool. I felt like running.

Blitzen's Tale
Dog park was cool this morning. Szabo was there but we dont pay much attention to each other. I like his Mom. I alwasy run ovr to say hello when I see her come in.

I took a nap. Chatted with the ladies outdoors. I dont get much sewing done. Our neighbor, Marilyn, is moving to the new apartment complex for seniors down the street. I like living in a one story building. Nobody above and nobody below.

BOOK REVIEW
Diane Mott Davidson, *The Cereal Murders*
Book jacket calls this a cross beteen Mary Higgins Clark and Betty Crocker.
Goldy Shulz, caterer. First, the valedictorian of the private school is killed. This is the school attended by Goldy's son. Then various things happen. The theme of the book is the competition to get into good colleges.
I find the killer rather unbelievable.

August 30, 2009

We slept in until eleven and went directly to the dog park. A breeze was blowing and it was cool in the shade. The dogs just lay around. I had a chance to read.

Lady Chica's Tale
I just lay around on the table. No use running in the sun. Then mom was gone all day.

Blitzen's Tale
There was a little girl Boston I tried to hump. Her dad didn't like that. They finally went over in the big dog side. Lots of little dogs were hassling.

Martha picked me up at 2:15 PM. Spent the afternoon and evening hanging out. Jeff and martha were cooking. Cooking. Cooking. Stuff from Thailand. Something called Beef that made the Tiger cry. It was good.

They brot me home just in time to see Mystery. Inspector Lewis. Take off on the old Inspector Morse series. Good program.

BOOK REVIEW
John Lescroart, *The Vig*
Vigorish (vig) is Yiddish slang for winnings. It is the interest paid on a loan from a loan shark. It takes a long time for this to have meaning in this book.

Dismas Hardy series. Fourth book of a series which is like a continued story. In book three Dis finds the killer of Eddie Cochran. Four months lateer, in this book, he is romancing the widow who is pregnant. In the most recent book in 2009 Dis and Frannie have sent three kids off to college.
A convict Dis sent away when he was an assistant DA is out on parole and gunning for Dis. A second DA is missing presumed dead. I looked at the last chapter. So I missed the surprise.

I set the alarm for 10 AM and hurried over to Senior Center altho I knew teacher of tai chi would probably not be therre. (he had to give daughter a ride home from hospital). However, a nursing home had brot breakfast. I had quiche and wonderful watermelon and a muffin. Made a library run.
For some reason I am sleepy.

I woke up from my nap totally disoriented. There must be a part of the brain which orients. The brain is a complex place. It knows where I am, who I am, the back story, when it is. I missed the program on PBS last Monday which was about the brain. Some man had slices taken off his brain. Then he could not remember things.

We went to the park early bc I have a meeting tonite. Not a shred of shade in the little park. We went into the big dog park and I kept Blitzen on a leash. Lady Chica did not run. She sat in the grass in the shade beside the table where I sat.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom is such a party pooper. She would not let me run in the park. Just bc I get out all the time. I never ran away. I just ran outside the fence all around and around and around.

Lady Chica's Tale
Man it was too hot to run today. I dont know why Mom took us out so early when the sun was still hot. She could have waited until the sun had gone down.

Leta wrote that for dogs, all humans are Southern Baptists. They always say NO.
Attended AlAnon tonight, birthday night for Ruth C and Martina. AlAnon is so great. People blossom.

BOOK REVIEW
William Krueger, *Iron Lake*
Cork O'Connor police procedural. In this first book of the series, Cork is an ex-sheriff having been recalled. A kid is missing and in looking for him Cork finds a judge who has apparently committed suicide. But we mysteryphiles know that the judge has really been murdered. Actually the prologue implied such.
I am reading this series over again bc I want to experience the north woods. I really get into my books. I dont read words. I read scenes. I was actually cold reading this altho temp was 100.

August 27, 2009

For curious readers: In 1960, I voted for the Prohibition Ticket which was on the ballot in Michigan and my mother knew some of the candidates.
In 1964 I had changed states and did not vote. In one of the campaigns I was mgr for a delegate to Illinois convention pledged to Barbara Jordan.

1:30 AM Cant get to sleep. Had a snack. Sometimes I think that Blitzen and I talk to each other. We do communicate. I was sitting up reading and he was sleeping on the sofa beside me. He got up and barked at me. He wanted us to go to bed.

8 AM Dragged myself out of bed. Vet apt for Lady Chica's annual. I promise myself I can sleep all afternoon.

We got to the vet's and hung around for an hour or so. Both dogs have gained a pound when they need to be losing. I could say it is muscle!!!! That is my excuse. Muscle weighs more than fat. Otherwise LC is in good shape.
now for my promised nap.

Slept all afternoon. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GLADYS.

I am going to keep track of when I feed dogs. I knew Lady Chica was gaining weight.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom dragged us off to the vet this morning. All I did was get weighed. Mom was irritated with me bc I kept scratching her and pestering her.

Lady Chica's Tale
Went to the vet this morning and had some shots. It was so boring. We had to wait around a long time bc Dr. Jan was sticking pins in some dog. I heard her tell mom.

We left for the dog park in time to be on the way home when the storm broke. We saw a violent lightning bolt that struck sparks in something. It was like fireworks. Three hail stones hit us.
Waiting for MI5. Hopefully no pledge drive tonight.

BOOK REVIEW
Faye Kellerman, *Blindman's Bluff*
Decker and Lazarus police procedural. This is a long lived series, about twenty books. Hannah was born in book three and now she is sixteen. In this book, a wealthy family is shot by intruders. Two sons and a bro are suspects.

Slept in until ten. My coffee tastes thin. I have been dissolving instant coffee in milk for a sort of latte. Came from reading James Lee Burke. Regular coffee tastes like water.
I intend to get some sewing done today. I am feeling energetic.
I guess I got my grieving out of the way. Today is Libby's birthday.
We did not have a funeral for her. Martha organized a memorial weekend at Galveston on her birthday (2006).
Two years later (2008) we met again on Galveston. My son, Steve, said he wanted to do this every year. Alas. The beach house was swept away in a hurricane a week later. And Steve died in January.

11:41 AM I have spent almost two hours sitting at my computer. No wonder I never get anything done. I have been emailing back and forth with Ruth C and my sister. My sister called briefly on Skype. We are discussing my childhood memories. I am trying to write a Memoir.

I have sewed a little and read. I cant seem to get to sleep.
Blitzen knows that Oda Mae brings food even if he doesn't get any. When she knocks at the door he cries. I dont tell her that he is excited about the food. not her

PPQS tonight.
Listening to NPR for the past six months has been a course in Finance 101. I never knew anything much about finance. Think had a talking head who has written a book on the FED.

Spent time scrapbooking while Lea designed her next project -- stained glass. We watched on PBS a video of "The kennedy Family". I did not vote for JFK and I did not grieve for him. As I watched people declare him a saint, I realized how it was that Lincoln became a saint. But that is all long ago.
I looked out at the dogs and they were lying in the damp sand where John keeps it damp for the dogs.

Lady Chica's Tale
What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's. Actually we just lay in the cool sand.

Blitzen's Tale
What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's.

BOOK REVIEW
Henning Mankell, *The Fifth Woman*
Kurt Wallander police procedural. Set in Sweden, written in Sweden. I really, really recommend this novel for mysteryphiles. A man is found killed by falling on bamboo stakes. Another is strangled and tied to a tree. A third is thrown in a lake in a weighted sack. the police in Ysted are working hard to solve the homicides.

August 25, 2009

I did not eat treats nor snacks at Baptist Center.

The morning went smoothly. We served 12 families at the Food Pantry. We were not giving out clothes. Only groceries and sack lunches. We give out about 200 sack lunches.
Last week and yesterday they gave out 825 school uniforms. Ft. Worth requires school uniforms.
I came home and took a nap for 3 hours, despite the man trimmng bushes and barking dogs.

I worked on quilt blocks. After the News Hour we went to the park. The days are getting shorter. It was almost dark by 8:30 PM. My dogs raced big dogs, esp Buddy. None of my regulars were there. Ray is getting evaluated for surgery for cataracts. I spied Holly across the field but ignored her.

Lady Chica's Tale
We had a lot of dogs racing tonight. Had a great time. I really enjoy racing like that. That silly Buddy stands at the fence and cries if I dont run.

Blitzen's tale
Those big busters were out running tonight. The sun was down behind the trees and it was cool. Mom actually walked around the park. She mostly sits and reads. I like to sit on her book.

BOOK REVIEW
Terri Persons, *Blind Spot*
As I said before, if you can deal with a psychic FBI Special Agent (who has sex with a ghost) then this is a good read.
The plot is interesting. They keep finding bodies with their right hand cut off. The first happening is that a hound dog comes home with a hand in his mouth.

August 23, 2009

I leaped out of bed ...... well, I sort of crawled out of bed and got to Ft Woof just as Judy was leaving but she turned around and stayed. Motorsickles practicing. It was too funny. They paused for a few minutes, and Blitzen stood at the fence barking for them to start again.

Off to Wendy's.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom kept me on time out most of the time. I tried to dig under the fence to get those durned motorsicles. Almost made it, too. She and Judy are such party poopers.

1:47 PM The strangest thing just happened. The cover of my porch light exploded. I opened the door and I heard a pop and glass scattered over the sidewalk.
Judy and I spent two hours at Wendy's discussing the mental health of our various relatives. Judy's father-in-law has Alzheimer's and the family is discussing how to cope.

Lady Chica's Tale
That stupid Blitzen keeps trying to dig out under the fence at the dog park. I dont know why he thinks he wants out there to get run over. I came home and took a nap.

I took a nap. doing some sewing and reading. Awfully frustrated about facebook. I want to see Brianna's pictures. Kerri has a message I cant read. I cant navigate.

I like to think I keep up with technology but I cant manage facebook and I cant manage my new cell phone.

BOOK REVIEW
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, *Relic*
Modern retelling of the oldest Sumerian tale. Pendergast and D'Angostino police procedural. A beast is lurking in the sub basement of the New York Museum of Natural History. Two boys are murdered. Then a security guard is killed. The beast is created by a virus which infects humans and changes their DNA. All very scientific.

August 23, 2009

Woke up at 7:40 AM. So I decided to get to Sunday school.

Glad I went to SS. We had a good discussion.
I liked the sermon. I like our new pastor's sermons. He just talks.

Our table at the fellowship lunch was hilarious. Sort of synergistic effect. Beverly would label me "an early 20th century progressive".
Uncle Mark was there. He labels me Dr. M. for Dr. Marching. Once i sang "marching thru Georgia". He says that is like singing "Onward Christian Soldiers" in Bagdad.

Now for a nap.

Dogs got restless about 6:30. They ran and ran so much that lady Chica beat us to the gate going home. All the dog park regulars were amazed. Judy, Ken and Szabo were there. I am tired tonight.

Blitzens Tale
Szabo got right hostile tonight and growled at me when I was trying to mount the same dog he was. That dog kept coming back to our bench. His dad would take him away and the little dog came back.

Lady Chica's Tale
Well, I indulged Buddy tonight and raced with him for a long time. His mom says he cries when he gets to the park and knows I am there. Chance came too late tonight. I was exhausted. Blitzen and Szabo were being their insufferable little selves.

BOOK REVIEW
Tony Hillerman, *Shape Shifter*
I am reading Hillerman's books over again. In this book, a friend sends Leaphorn a picture in a magazine showing a navaho rug which supposedly burned in a fire. The rug was woven in 1860 to commerate the long walk back from being interned in a fort. So Leaphorn, retired, starts investigating, actually, a shape changer.

Up and off to the dog park by 10 AM. Fairly comfortable in the shade. Ray was there. Also a girl who is Muslim and is fasting. Cassie's mom was there and the history prof from TCU. We only talk about health care reform when Ray has walked away.

Lady Chica's Tale
Ray brot his doggie pool today and I had a great time splashing. We did not do much running. It is too hot to run in the sun. There were a few bicycles going by.

Blitzen's Tale
A man at the dog park said his dog teacher told him that beagles were like Houdini, the best to get out. I guess I can thank my beagle ancestors.

After my nap I went over to farmer's market. Eight vendors today and more variety of produce. Fresh produce costs money. I wanted tomatoes --- to eat as snacks. Got cukes and melons. Martha raised some cukes that crossed with melons. I call them melcumbers. The farmer called them cukalopes.

Then I took another nap. I think the heat stresses me out. The temp is not so high but the sun is so hot. Temp was 91 and real feel 96.

7:27 PM and I am going to take a third nap. I am just too tired to read.

BOOK REVIEW
Attica Locke, *Black Water Rising*
literary thriller. The story is set in Houston, TX, in 1981. I moved there in 1982; so it sounded interesting. Jay Porter is a black lawyer, just keeping his head above water. He has an activist past which haunts him and unfolds for the reader as the book progresses. He takes his wife for a birthday ride along the bayou. On the way home, they rescue a woman who has fallen into the bayou. Later in the paper he reads that a man has been found dead along the bayou and apparently the woman had shot him.
In the last chapter the reader learns the meaning of "Black Water Rising".

6 AM and a wild storm hit us. We needed the rain. The electricity went out but it was back on when I came back from walking dogs. I walked them into the neighboring area where they will defacate. No dog park today.
Off to tai chi. I need to draw a smiley face. I did not eat a piece of cake. Always cake at Senior Center. Kroger donates yesterday's cake.

Noon and time to take a nap. I made a library run.

Lady Chica's Tale
I hate that stuff Mom is trying to feed us. I dont know where she gets that stuff. She did put a little yogurt on it to kill the taste --- or give it some taste.

Blitzen's Tale
Well, we didn't get to the dog park today. Just hangin out around the house. First it rained. Then mom said it was too hot.

8 PM Still pledge drive. No Bill Moyers nor my programs on PBS. They have music from the fifties. There must be some marketing strategy behind this. Do older people pledge more?

BOOK REVIEW
Ellis Peters, *Dead Man's Ransom*
I am getting bored with Bro. Cadfael. Every plot is the same. An innocent young man is accused of murder. Bro Cadfael finds the real killer and the young man rides off into the sunset with his true love. In this case, a young Welsh nobleman is held hostage for the sheriff of Shrewsbury.
Under Welsh law, a blood price can be paid for murder Hence dead man's ransom..
The Abbey of Shrewsbury is a real place. in ruins now. I think Ellis Peters started writing her books in an effort to raise money to restore the place.
I find it interesting that the Wales/English border is a border. The sheriff says, "I'm a frontiersman."
Allan: There were 13 television episodes. Each is on DVD.

3:15 AM Another night when I cant get to sleep. Altho I may have been asleep. I had that experience of being in a dream and being awake simultaneously.

We slept in until eleven. Lady Chica was curled up against my back like a little heating pad. We are going to visit Pup tonight. So no dog park this morning. I am determined to clean and sew today.

I took two naps. Did some vacuuming. Filled some bobbins. Then we went over to Lea's for PPQS [Philosophical and Paleontological Quilting Society]. I worked on scrapbook. lea sewed a nightgown for her grand daughter. We discused the Celts and Welsch bc I had been reading Bro Cadfael.

Pup had brot home a bone from his walk last night and chawed on it all day. Blitzen came zipping in and buried it. Then Blitzen dug it up and buried it again. At Pup's he buries his treats.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom just broke the rules. What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's.

Lady Chica's Tale
I dont know why Blitzen keeps burying things. Who wants to eat something after it has been buried. Blitzen is not very couth.

BOOK REVIEW
Robert Barnard, *The Killings on Jubilee Terrace*
Police procedural. Jubilee Terrace is a soap opera (English). One of the characters is killed. Somebody burns his house down when he and a woman are in the house.
I read this in one sitting. Fascinating book.

Baptist Center. Only one request for groceries. so far 9:30 am We give out school uniforms this afternoon.

We closed at eleven. I came home and took a long nap.

Lady Chica's Tale
Buddy was at the park tonight but not Chance. We did a lot of running. It was cool in the shade and there was a breeze.

Blitzen's Tale
The big old busters come to the fence and want to race us. Buddy comes and cries. He has a crush on Lady Chica.

We went to the park at seven. Ray was there, of course, and another Elizabeth. Some new people. I sat at the table and read and listened.
Tonight I am watching on PBS *John Denver Remembered*. I attended a concert of his before he made a name for himself. It was in the music auditorium of SIU, holding about 200 people. So you know it was early on.

BOOK REVIEW
Stuart Kaminsky, *Lieberman's Folly*
Abe Lieberman series, police procedural. I found this book disappointing. The plot is too complex. The book begins with a prologue. At the very end it comes together. People have new identities and I was confused. Worse than a russian novel.

Up at 8 and out the door to dog park. Two motorsickles were practicing. The park has put another pipe at the bottom of the fence but Blitzen was trying to dig out anyhow. The lawn mower waited until we had left before mowing small dog park. I talked to him the other day. He said he had watched my dogs for years. Why are mine the only dogs who chase lawn mowers and cars and motorcycles?

Came home and had to take a shower. Lady Chica was caked with clay, like a chicken about to be roasted. Off to Wendy's. By then Judy and I had talked each other out. Judy is depressed.
I made a bank run and a library run. Now for a nap.

Blitzen's Tale
I dont know why Mom gets so upset when I try to dig out of the park. She is so picky. I got out once and it scared me.
We just laid around all day. It's hot. Mom says there is an orange alert.

Lady Chica's Tale
Did a lot of running this morning. Two motorsickles were practicing. We ran and ran and ran. So we just laid around all day.

The heat lingers. 7:45 PM and it is still 97 degrees. It is so hot and humid. But it is Aug 17; ?August is half over. And the days are getting shorter.

BOOK REVIEW
Terri Persons , *Blind Sight*
For anyone who can deal with a psychic FBI special agent, this is a good read. Somehow the "sightings" seem normal in this book. Police procedural. Set in Minnesota, on the shores of Lake Superior. The body of a woman is found in the woods, with a fetus torn from her womb. I would have thot this weird, but I read in the newspaper about such a case in Pennsylvania. It is still weird but believable.

Another horrible dream, a memory I think triggered by Jake's graduation. I was young and looking for a job. I was alone in a strange city with two trailer loads of household goods to do something with.
I am glad I am not looking for a job.

I reset my alarm and skipped Sunday School. Decided I need to get out and go to church and have lunch with my buddies.

And so I did. We laugh a lot at our table at church luncheon in fellowship hall. Uncle Mark was not there today. He is in the state of Washington. So says Ron.

Then I slept for 2.75 hours. I begin to feel a mite rested. Always after I get rested I feel stronger.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom forgot to let us write last night. She claimed she was too tired to remember. Not much to say today. She was gone all morning and slept all afternoon. Chance, the white hound dog, was there to run the fence tonight.
There was a lady dog who was in a receptive mode. All of us guys were on her.

Lady Chica's Tale
This is two days in a row that Mom put on her good shoes and went out all morning. What's with that? Chance, the white pointer, was there tonight ready to run the fence. I dont think lady dogs should come to the park when they are in receptive mode.

We went to the dog park about seven. days are definitely shorter. Judy and Ray had a shouting match about health care reform. Ray hates black people, including our pres. People are so ignorant! Ray does not seem to be aware that Secure Horizons is Medicare.
Angela is worried about VA being taken away. She is not happy with her care, but she gets $2000 worth of medicine every month. That is more than my income.

After Ray had gone home,Ken gave us a lecture on how nobody pays for health insurance. Your employer pays and passes it on to the consumer.

BOOK REVIEW
Dana Stabenow, *Whisper to the Blood*
Kate Shugak, native PI in Alaska. This book is hard to describe. Kate tracks down bad guys and also is elected president of the local Native Association. She realizes the aunties are turning vigilante and tells them to knock it off.

Jake, son of Martha my daughter, is graduating from college today, from North Texas Univ in Denton, TX.

I woke minutes before the alarm rang at 6 AM. This happens often for me, and I wonder if the alarm clock makes some kind of noise just before it rings. Graduation is at 9:00 in Denton, TX, 45 minutes from here. (People commute from Arlington) Martha and Jeff will leave home at six, arriving about fifteen or twenty minutes later. Jeff will take us out for champagne brunch after the ceremony.

Martha and Jeff picked me up at 7:30 and off we went to Denton. Arriving early we drove thru McDonald's and I had a Mcflurry. We parked. We had to climb up steps and down steps to get to our seats in the coliseum. Graduation ceremonies are not particularly inspiring. As a faculty member I sat through 18 in Carbondale. (The president believed all faculty needed to be there.)
First the graduates marched in. Then the president spoke. Then the provost spoke. Then several deans and misc people spoke. The deans presented the grads to the prez who granted the baccaleureate degree. The grads marched across the platform, their names read one by one. That gave everyone a moment of glory.
The grads rose and thanked the people who had suppoted them by clapping. And the grads marched out again.
We drove into Fort Worth to Taverna. We had sparkling Italian wine. I had French toast. What a feast day this has been.
At noon everybody went home to take a nap.

I slept for two hours. Got up and checked email. Slept for two more hours. The dogs got bored and we went off to the dog park. When the sun began to go down, they started running, with Buddy and the white pointer named Chance. Judy and Ken came. Happily Holly sat downover under the shelter and we were in the corner of the park.

I am so tired. 9 PM. So tired.

BOOK REVIEW
Kenneth Abel, *Bait*
I got halfway thru this book before abandoning it, too noir. Well written, altho I hate flash backs every other paragraph. After a while it began to make sense and things began to come together. I read the last few chapters. The protagonist is a cop in narcotics division (Boston PD). His partner is killed in a drug bust and he starts drinking heavily. DWI he is involved in an accident and kills a mobster's son. Convicted of vehicular homicide, he is sentenced to 18 months in a hospital. When he gets out, he awaits his assasination. And I cant take it anymore.

Night of strange dreams. I woke up the first time getting out of bed to call the sheriff. I dont know what that was all about.
Next I had a dream that I was living on a commune. I didn't like any of the people that I met and it was all weird. Now 6:48 AM. Going back to bed. I wanted to get my dreams down before I forgot.

Up at 8 and over to the dog park where I met Judy. We chatted. Then back home where we have a new maintenance man. He seems to have fixed my toilet. Then off to tai chi.
After tai chi I had German potato soup at the Senior Center. and a piece of birthday cake. Yesterday Bill Rapp, our tai chi teacher, turned 90. Today Margie Threadgill is 86.

There is an old saying that worrying is plowing your field twice, once in your mind and once for real. For two or three weeks I have dreaded going to the bank. WaMu was taken over by Chase and I needed to tweak my account. Well, I stopped by and was treated so nicely.

I got a Hershey bar at Baptist Center. I hid it so well I cant find it.

The dogs and I slept all afternoon. Dang it. Pledge week and none of my programs are showing. No MI5 last night. Not even Bill Moyers tonight.

At 8:15 my sister called on Skype and we talked for half an hour. She has been reading the flu book. She worked for Parke Davis, a Pharmaceutical company, and she is so cynical about marketing. She thinks the swine flu alert is part of a marketing campaign by pharmaceuticals. Yet she and I dont agree on health care.

Blitzen's Tale
Uncle Mark thinks we ought to attend a 12 step program for barking. Mom thinks we bark appropriately. We only bark at people going past.

Lady Chica's Tale
We slept all afternoon. The park was crowded this morning. Lots of little dogs. One woman had four black dachsunds.

BOOK REVIEW
Diane Mott Davidson, *Dying for Chocolate*
Number two in the Goldilocks Catering series. This is a little bizarre. Goldy is spending the summer as a live-in cook with a weird general. he is a demolitions expert. We were up and off to dog park before 9 AM. Szabo heard my voice and ran across parking lot to greet me. Then he was going to climb in car to say hello to the dogs. Then we went into the dog park where Judy and I sat chatting away.
Stopped at Town Talk for groceries on the way home. Found some strange bread made w/o gluten. I stop for dog food. Now 11:33 AM.

Then I took a nap. Upon waking my first thought was: "I have missed MI5". Leslie B and I dined out at Outback. I have quesidillas for my entre. I am addicted. Tonight we mostly talked about books we have read or are reading. As we left, Leslie asked how I intended to spend my evening. See above.

Lady Chica's Tale
Today was so boooring. Nothing going on at the dog park. Mom slept all day. We did have the lawn mowers to bark at.

Blitzen's Tale
LC said it. Boring. We did have fun barking at the lawn mowers. Mom thot she was sleeping. She went out again tonight. I wish she would read some more in Hank the Cowdog.

John Erikson, *Hank the Cowdog $17*
The case of the Car-Barkaholic-Dog. We firmly believe that despite the illustrations, Hank is a blue heeler. So far in the book, Hank has "syruptitiously" taken a ride into town when Slim takes the pickup in for groceries. Hank explains that syrup is "slow and slippery"

BOOK REVIEW
Carol O'Connell, *Bone by Bone*
Suspense thriller. O'Connell's novels are always a little precarious. Josh Hobbs was 14 when he went for a hike in the woods and vanished. Twenty years later, somebody begins to leave his bones, one by one, on his fa's porch. Oren Hobbs, his older brother. leaves his job as a warrant officer in the Army CID and returns to Coventry, CA. to find his bro's killer. Josh was a buddying photographer who liked to take pictures of people, pictures that revealed secrets. The novel is also revealing of the inner life of Oren Hobbs.

Blitzen's Tale
8 AM My tummy is singing little songs. I didn't eat my breakfast. Then I went out and ate grass.
I felt better by bedtime. Ate my supper.

Well, I went back to bed. Now it is almost 2 PM. Lea and John are back from vacation. So we are going over there tonight. PPQS: Philosophy and Paleontology Quilting Society.

I did scrapbooking tonight. I am making a scrapbook out of pictures from our trip to Puerto Viarta. Susan stopped by, a friend of ours from UU church. Lea of course invited her to dinner. We had smashed potatoes, tabouli and sausage. Yummy. I turned own pie in favor of berries and yogurt.

Baptist Center. I have been busy but people are coming in one at a time. It is not so hard. We have served 16 families.

Busy, busy day. Came home and took a nap. (I ate snacks at BC). Had a massage. I feel tired all over after a massage.
I was eating supper when I was invited to neighborhood bday party. So we hustled off to the dog park. The sun was overcast and it was cool. Not many big dogs. Then home for the party. We had it outdoors on the sidewalk and the dogs could see me. Blitzen knew we were eating. I brot my dish home for him to lick. Gave some pudding to lady Chica.

Blitzen's Tale
I could see Mom out there having a party. She took us to say hello when we came home from the dog park. Then I could see her eating. I tried to get out the window but I couldn't. She did come home and let us lick the dish.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom was out there having a party. She took us around and let everybody pet us. We said hello. Then she sat out there eating. We yapped at her and she finally came home. Let us lick the dish.

BOOK REVIEW
Book reviewed yesterday by John Lescroart is *Plague of Secrets*

T. Lynn Ocean, *Southern Poison*
Jersey Barnes series. Wildly fantastic story about terrorism. Somebody blew up a container ship loaded with ammunition. Quite the fireworks. Also a sub plot. I enjoyed reading this -- if you dont take it seriously.

August 10, 2009

We were up and off to the dog park. Brief visit bc I was due at Wendy's at eleven. Judy and I had our usual chat. Mostly about health care reform My idea would be to move Medicare downward. First move to 60. Then 55. After a while people would be clamoring to get Medicare. I dont know why everybody is so upset.

Went Krogering on the way home. There is a Kroger store near Wendy's. Then a library run. Dana Stebenow has a new novel out, Kate Shugak. Yeah.

Blitzen's Tal
I gave Mom a real run for the money this morning. This guy was mowing the lawn in the Small Dog park. So we went in the big dog park. She left the leash dangling on me, hoping if I went under the fence it would catch. Ha ha. I couldn't see that I could get under the gate so I led her on a merry run the length of the field. Good exercise for her. We want her to live as long as possible.

Lady Chica's Tale
I was still tired from yesterday. Still tired. Blitzen keeps wanting to play and I am tired. He is such a pest.

I took a nap. What's new? I did hand sewing during NewsHour. Took an antihistamine. My eyes are swelling.
Could somebody reading a library book have had cats?

BOOK REVIEW
John Lescroart, *Plague of Secrets*
legal thriller. 20 books in the series of Des hardy. Des is a defense lawyer. In this he is not personally threatened. His client is charged with murder on the basis of no evidence. He and his investigator search for exculpatory evidence. One of the homicide investigators is convinced that Maya killed the victims that she charges without clear evidence. Satisfactory book. I couldn't put it down.

Forgot to set the alarm but woke up naturally. 81^ at 8 AM. Off to religious services.

Lady Chica's Tale
This is the day that Mom gets all dressed up and goes away all day. Well, almost all day. She has special shoes she wears. I guess we might as well take a nap. I see Oda mae and Russ get all dressed up and go away.

Sunday school and church. We read the Psalm in Sunday School used in the sermon. I get more out of the sermon that way. Today was a good sermon about crying out from the depths. it was a Psalm.

I read an article about the intelligence of dogs. Herding dogs always come out first but I think that is a racial bias --- human race. Herding dogs are probably number one in interaction with humans. Hounds smell. That is a different kind of intelligence.
I never hear of blue heelers being tested. They are super smart but it is "feral". Lady Chica was twice as good as any puppy in puppy class. At graduation they began giving prizes to the dog coming in second bc she was getting them all. But get her home and she never heard of sit or stay or whatever.
Herding dogs have to anticipate where the sheep or cattle are going next.
Blitzen is super smart and he is a terrier/hound mix, not noted for intelligence. He is aware of anything in his environment.

Took a nap. I wake up thinking it is morning and wondering what day it is.

At 6:30 PM the dogs were getting impatient; so off we went to the dog park. Days are getin shorter. The shade crept over our table half an hour ealier. Szabo and friends turned up and we chatted. Holly arrived. She talks about herself almost exclusively. Finally Lady Chica was ready to go home. She was so tired she was almost too tired to jump in the car.

Blitzen's Tale
We stayed at the dog park for a long time. We ran so much that after a while I was too tired to get up and chase bicycles. A horse walked past and we chased him.

BOOK REVIEW
Bill Crider, *murder Among the Owls*
Older Women's League. Just a nifty title. Sheriff Dan Rhodes in TX. The neighbor's cat strays into Rhodes' kitchen, and he goes to check on the neighbor, finding her dead on her kitchen floor. I did not guess the killer's identity.
Rhodes wonders why male animals are termed, "fixed". He thinks they should be called, "broken".

We were up before 8. I stopped for gasoline while it was cool, and cool it was. Dog park was full of dogs and people. I had to chat with some regulars, like Cassie's mom and Ray. I stayed for a while to read. Lady Chica was so eager to go home she actually came toward me. For those of you unfamiliar with history, it is only recently that LC has been willing to go home. I have chased her for half an hour. Once I got a person to come over from big dog side to help me.

Lady Chica's Tale
I dont know what was wrong with Mom this morning. She just wouldn't go home. I came and sat on her book but she didn't get the hint. It was cool this morning and we had a lot of bicycles to chase.

Blitzen's Tale
Yeah, Mom stayed for a long time at the dog park. She says she got a Hank the Cowdog to read to us but I haven't heard any ofit yet.

My friend, Lea, called me on the road in Colorado, just to say hello. They have been touring canyons. I took a small nap. Vaguely ache today.

Suddenly it is 7:30 PM. I have been cleaning, doing laundry and something very hard for me: sorting. I have numerous boxes and baskets full of odds and ends. I am sorting objects, intending to have one box of buttons, one of binding tape, one of etc.

BOOK REVIEW
Earlene Fowler, *Love Mercy*
First of a proposed new series starring Love Mercy. Love is a widow living on the coast of CA. One of her grand daughters, Rett, runs away from home in TN and hitchhikes to CA to live with her grandmother. [I am getting old. Old. Rett's grandfather went to war in Vietnam.] The main plot of this book concerned dealing with great grandpa's onset of dementia.

Friday is a busy day. Up at 8 and off to the dog park where I chatted with Judy. Then off to tai chi. Senior Center was serving hot soup for lunch. Made a libray run. Absolutely need a nap.

And so I did. Now six and Newshour is coming on. Friday is my tv night.

I told Martha that I got depressed watching Bill Moyer's Journal and she said to stop watching!!

Lady Chica's Tale
I spent most of the day sleeping. we went to the park early this morning and I got some running in. We usually see Szabo and his mom. His mom and my mom sat on a bench and talked.

Blitzen's Tale
I think I am getting old. I slept most of the day. Yesterday was really a hard day. Did some running this morning, chasing the lawn mower running on the big dog side. It took that buster a long time to get that lawn mowed.

BOOK REVIEW
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, *Cemetery Dance*
I quit halfway thru bc it moved so slow. Or should that be slowly? Series features FBI Special Agent Pendergast who seems to be modeled on detectives of the thirties. Reminds me of Ellery Queen. He has a buddy who is a homicide detective. One of their friends, a reporter, is killed by a zombii.
I peeked at the last chapter and the zombii is a hoax, Hollywood makebup. from the dust jacket I think a feature of this series is esoteric unmasked. Pendergast is from the Louisiana Bayou country.

Up at 8 and off to the dog park. Judy and Szabo were there and we lingered till ten. It was cool but heating up. Now 84^ at 11.
Determined to get some sewing done today.

Took a three hour nap. Other than that I have been sewing.

MI5 at 9 tonight.

Lady Chica's Tale
We had a hard day today. We spent about two hours at the dog park. Then we had to protect our turf from the lawnmowers for most of the afternoon. And mom was just taking a nap.

Blitzen's Tale
Ol Chica said it. We had a hard day. Acourse we took naps after the lawn mowers left. They took a long time today blowing and something.

BOOK REVIEW
Still reading *The Transformed Cell*. The author has finally killed cancer by changing immune system. Just certain kinds. There now is a vaccine for one kind of cancer.

5 AM Woke from a dream. I did not understand most of the dream. I rescued a kitten. I was somewhere. Some kids had two kittens and wanted to play with mine. Their fa intimidated me. So I was so distressed. I worried about my kitten. I got my kitten back as the dream ended. [In the Grilling Season the heroine rescues a kitten.]

We were up and out to the dog park by 9 AM where we met Judy and Szabo. The dogs didn't have much to chase and lay around most of the hour. It was cool in the shade. Temp is going up to 100 every day and much hotter in the sun.
I came home and slept for three hours. Now 3 PM. I intend to sew like mad for the next two hours. I am stitching the edges of pockets. I have ten shirts underway!!!!!

Up at 7:15 am and off to Baptist Center. Google Blitzen's Tale.

Lady Chica is maturing. She made her first Grrr. Blitzen is the king of Grrrr, night and day. Lady Chica was lying at the foot of the bed when Blitzen leaped on and LC went Grrrr. Usually Blitzen is bed guarding.

Business was slow at Baptist Center. We only served four families. First week of the month. We are not giving clothing during August because somehow we have children underfoot. And we give school uniforms August 19.

I came home and took my nap. Did hand sewing until seven when we went to dog park. At 7:15 PM exactly, shade falls over the table where I want to sit. Dogs think this is their territory. Actually the evening was cool altho temp is 95^.

lady Chica's Tale
I didn't do much running tonight. I just wasn't up to it. After a while gracie's mom came over and sat at our table. I jumped on the table and gave her a kiss to thank her for the bones she brings us.

Blitzen's Tale
I jumped up on the table, too, and gave Gracie's mom a kiss. Mostly we just sort of wandered around tonight.

August 3, 2009

The dogs woke me up before the alarm rang. So off to the dog park by 8:15 where we met Judy and Szabo. Cool in the morning.

Judy and I chatted for an hour at the dog park and then almost two hours at Wendy's. We discussed such esoteric subjects as communion and transubstant (sp?). Also politics and health care reform.
Made a library run. Now 1:34 pm. Soon I will take a nap.

Lady Chica's Tale
We had a lot of fun this morning. First there was a big hound to chase along the fence. Then the lawn mower was running back and forth in the big dog side. Szabo was there and Mom was talking to his mom.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom put a new scarf on me this morning. I have finally gotten over my tummy ache. I dont know what I ate. It was fun running this morning. It was cool. I mean temperature wise.

I took a nap. I have been busy cutting out parts for more shirts, caftan shirts. As if I needed more. I am addicted to shirts. How about a 12 step program? I have no power over shirts and my life has become unmanageble.

BOOK REVIEW
I have read the first chapter of 8 or 10 books. I cant seem to get into them. I am halfway thru *Cemetary Dance* but it is a big thick book.

How can dogs find the exact center of the bed without a ruler or sextant?
I got to bed at 11 pm and had eight hours of sleep. This wonderful weather. Only 73^. Off to SS and church.
I dreamed that I was trying to quarantine people. That book on the Flu really got to me.

At Sunday School we again did lectio divina. We had a guest preacher. This was 25th reunion of Chapel Choir (high school kids). This man was one of the original kids in that choir. Then I had lunch with the gang.

Came home and took a nap. We went to dog park at 6. I go to dog park once a day. The big white dog was there who loves to run. My dogs ran until they were tired. As we were leaving Szabo and his folks were coming in.

Now I am about to watch Wallender on Mystery Theatre on PBS. Channel 13 here.

BOOK REVIEW
Kwei Quartey, *Wife of the Gods*
Police procedural in Ghana. Inspector Darko Dawson is our new hero. He loses his temper and beats up people. The wife of the gods is not necessary to the plot. It lends a bit of local color. Young women are given to the priest as wife of the gods. A young woman is found dead in the woods. Interesting plot and lots of beliefs.

William L. Shirer, *The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich*
No possibility of reading the entirety of this huge book. The book begins with Hitler being appointed chancellor and a biography of Hitler. I had not thought about him being of great intelligence. He read a lot. autodidactic

Saturday morning. I pulled myself out of bed at 8 am. I had to have some coffee. While I chugalugged the rains came down. Short shower. It is still cool (81 degrees) so we will go later.
My quilt blocks are ready to have a strip pinned on. I take all the blocks and pin a stripe. Then I sew all blocks. Then press all blocks. Most of my red and black are ready. So I have only 32 left.

I took a nap. Then we went to the dog park at noon. Almost nobody there. I took dogs to Big Dog side where there is a long run along the road. Blitzen and Chica ran back and forth once, chasing a sooter. Then gave it up. I put Blitzen on a leash so he couldn't escape under the fence. By the time we reached the gate lady Chica had beaten us. I took both into the small dog park where they flaked on the table.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom took us into the Big Dog side. It is really more fun to run there bc it is longer. Then we went on the Little Dog side. Nobody much there this morning. Mostly I have been sleeping.

Blitzen's Tale
We had a run for a little while. No big bruisers around. Guess they are wimps, cant come out when it's wet. Nothing much moves on Saturday.

After coming home I slept for two or three hours and dreamed about burying dead bodies. I think it may have rained again.

If you want to see my blog (which is a copy of this) got to Google -- only Google -- and type:

"Blitzen" and "Chica"

I find it absolutely fascinating.
