April 30

At 7 am I fed dogs and we all went back to sleep. Finally got up at 9 to feed myself. I intend to spend the day resting after I check on cell phone. I charged cell phone and it died. My dogs know at least three words: walk, pup, park, eat (not sure this is distinguishable from treat - reaction is the same). They also watch me put on shoes or jeans.

Do you know what is wrong with my phone? I did not know how to turn it on. The EXIT button turns it both off and on. When it finished charging it turned itself off.
After getting my phone turned on we went to Lake Woof. (the dog park). We were the only mammals there. Knightly was there and went home. Drops began to fall and we returned.

Ft. Worth has shut down all schools for a week. They are washing everything down with clorox. one case of swine flu in FW. Mayfest has been cancelled. I suspect the thought has to do with the large percentage of Latinos in the population.

Took a rest. Watched CSI. I think I am bored with tv programs.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom had some sense this morning. She got up and fed us. We drove all over and waited in the car and finally got to the dog park. I am still fatigued from yesterday at Pup's. We were outdoors for a long time.

Blitzen's Tale
Well, I warned that old Knightly off and he left us alone and went home.

BOOK REVIEW:
P.D. James, *Private Patient*
The author is now 95 years old. She marries off Adam Dalgleish in this book. So this may be her last one. A woman is having an old scar removed. She stays at a manor run by the plastic surgeon where she is strangled. After the surgery. It is rather a long, dull book.

Addendum to Tuesday:
My wound is healing. Not even raw any more.
Nancy and I looked up the duck story on Snopes, about the man catching ducks being shoved out of the nest in a high rise bldg. Snopes had the pictures.

And Wed morning. Woke at 10. Listening to NPR. Bill Gates Sr. is promoting his book. He runs the bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is talking about education in the US. A mother of a teacher called in about the discipline problem. Gates thinks a good teacher can get the kids interested.
Ha. I quit subbing in 1992 bc I had a seventh grade math class. Not one of those kids was interested in anything. I am the genius Gates is talking about, but I could not interest those kids. They were apathetic.
In Dickinson where Libby taught 3rd grade, the school built a padded room to restrain one student.
The answer is not the school system. First, the economic system. Second, the mental health system. Libby had an autistic kid in her room.

Happily I got home tonight before the rain came. Another day of forced marching. Around UTA campus. We parked in a faculty lot, of course. I drove over to Lea's and deposited the dogs. Then we went on campus. We walked over to the library Special Collections. The exhibit was wider than I knew. It was a sample of Special Collections. Wonderful exhibit. Letters from the Civil War. Pics of the centennial celebration.
Then we walked over to faculty club to find that they had closed early. So back to the car across campus.
We had soup at Corner Bakery. Lea had an implant yesterday. So she had the day off. We went back to Lea's house and watched the news. Mstly it was about swine flu.
Lea had cooked soup for dinner. So we ate and I came home.
I had all day to rant and rave. Lea always has something to add.

Listened to Pres Obama's News Conference. I know everybody will have something to criticize. Now to unwind and get to bed. No nap today. Did not read a book.

Lady Chica's Tale
We went over to visit Pup for a long long time. It was fun but what happens at Pup's stays at Pup's.

Blitzen's Tale
Old Chica said it all. What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's. He is a good ol boy.

Lady Chica is prowling into the bag of paper to be recycled. How does she have the energy?

Baptist Center and the place is crazy. Loco. We've had a woman claiming assault. People wanting groceries who live everywhere. Last week of the month.

A woman was out of her mind. Claimed this man touched her and told her dirty names. Goodness. Many new people every week. They dont know the routine. We did service 17 families.

Came home and took a nap. Then off to dog park. Talked with Ray. He is a bigoted racist, but he went over and picked up after Blitzen, went to the fence to see where Blitzen dug. I have trouble walking. Weather.

This evening I watched Nova, about the Hobbit. A hominid never before discovered was found on an island off Java. Anthropology controversy over find.

Lady Chica's Tale
Boring day at the park. Blitzen was being naughty. Mom was picking up after me at one side of the field, and Ray put Blitzen on time out for humping a little dog. Then Blitzen tried to dig out under the fence. He is so naughty.

Blitzen's Tale
What can I say? Old Chica has given you all the news. It takes a village to raise a child. What is this about a dog park?

BOOK REVIEW
James Patterson, *Lifeguard*
Not in a series. Nice and simple to read. Three paintings are stolen. several people are murdered. The hero winds up marrying the FBI agent.

April 27

The storm arrived about 6 AM. The sky was lightened up and flickering. lady Chica is afraid of the lightning. She snuggled up in bed and I explained to her about counting between lightning and thunder. The lightning was far away. Later we got heavy thunder and Blitzen growls and barks at it.

2 PM. I didn't even feel my tooth going out. The dentist started poking around with needles and then the tooth was gone. Decided to indulge myself with ice cream, being told that I needed a soft diet.
Pat: Made a thrift store run. Nothing called out to me.

Took a nap and then to the dog park. The Big Dog side was a series of lakes. The First Dog would have had fun. An open invitation has been extended to the First Dog to visit Fort Woof. Few dogs there today. The wind was not blowing, which is unusual at the dog park.

I dont know if I can deal with The Trail of Tears, tonight's program on KERA. I do have a different perspective on one aspect of our treatment of native Americans. I was looking up the difference between pandemic and epidemic. The story in Wikipedia traced various epidemics during history. Every epidemic experienced by the native Americans had been experienced centuries earlier by Europeans, one as early as 500 AD. Similarly,Caucasians have some immunity to HIV, the thinking being that the Black Plague granted immunity to the survivors. Those of us here now descended from survivors.

The depiction of the actual trail of tears lasted only five minutes. I learned about that bc we lived near where the Cherokees had crossed southern Illinois. They crossed the Ohio and then were stuck by the Mississippi.

Lady Chica's Tale
I get so scared when the sky is all light. I snuggled in bed with Mom. She kept murmuring and I felt so snug and safe.
Not much happened at the dog park. Only one pesky little puppy named Pepper.

Blitzen's Tale
Those flying saucers were back again today. And they took Marilyn away with them. We may never see her again.
[Marilyn's daughter took her away in a wheel chair. I think it was bc it was raining and marilyn needs a walker.]
Nobody much at the dog park today. A pesky little puppy named Pepper who kept following me around.

BOOK REVIEW
Janet Langhart Cohen, *From Rage to Reason*

April 26, Sunday

Got up and made Sunday School. Today was Apple for the Teacher Day. I brought a can of applesauce, saying that at my age that is how we eat apples. Margie Threadgill had the same thot. I thot the sermon was boring, about the Good Shepherd.
Ate lunch with Margie and Bette. We had to listen to the Youth choir. bc they were raising money. I wanted to chat. 2:27 and I am about to take a nap.

The dogs allowed me one hour to sleep. Then Lady Chica started licking my face. Impossible to get away. She went up above the pillows and lay across the bed. Blitzen started pestering me. I finally got up and went to the dog park where the dogs ran and ran and got tired out. Yeah. Came home and am sitting around reading *Rage to Reason*, a book by a black woman who was married to clinton's Secy of Defense.

Lady Chica's Tale
Exhausted tonight. Really ran hard at the park. we really had to work hard to get Mom up and out of bed.

Blitzen's Tale
Ran and ran and ran. Really tired tonight.

BOOK REVIEW
David Baldacci, *The Simple Truth*
I don't know if I can finish this bc reading it frightens me. I think bc some of the police are the bad guys. Rufus has been in prison for 30 years for killing a child. Turns out he was forcibly given PCP. Now the Army is doing a follow up and Rufus finds out that he was on PCP. Mayhem all over the place. My favorite character is killed.

We went to the dog park. Just another day. The park is a deangerous place. A woman got hit on the head with a ball. A man was using that lever thing to throw a ball and it hit a woman.

Finally a shooter who is not a sociology major. Georgia prof is in dept of marketing. I wonder why he shot three people. Interesting story.
Complaint: The stories about octomom are always in video. Why cant somebody print a story?

Lady Chica's Tale
We got a pack of big dogs running. That was fun. They were leapfrogging over each other. Mom gave me a great bone. She says it is an occo something. I think means bone. She ate out the marrow.

Blitzen's Tale
We got them busters running this morning. Piles of them, falling all over each other. Mom always gives Chica the best of everything. She got a bone and I didn't.
[Editor's note. I give Chica messy things bc she eats in her cage. Blitzen takes anything out to the living room rug.]

I vote two thumbs down on the play tonight. The production was superb, both acting and sets. The play was by Stephen Shephard. I read his biography and this was autobiographical. There was no conclusion, just insanity. A man beats up his wife, causing brain damage. He disociates. everybody else in the play is crazy. And so it goes.

Friday evening April 24

Yesterday afternoon I went outside to find Oda Mae scouring blood from the sidewalk. I contributed some Oxysomething. It turns out that Clara fell in the kitchen. I dont know how she got blood all over the sidewalk. She cut her head and is in the hospital.

I think people need to make provisions for their pets in case of inability to care for them. I had a written will for Belle. Nobody knows what will happen with Benji, altho he is aggressive. I cant keep him. Marilyn says, "I hope somebody will take care of Callie (cat) if something happens to me."

We saw five one act plays. That was an evening! And all were good.
Play One. This was confusing till the last minute. A boy is talking to a magician and a clown. Turns out these are his puppets and he is putting them away.

Play Two. The Assasination of Trotsky. This was a farce. Trotsky has an ice pick in his head and he keeps talking.

Play Three. Imagined meeting between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Very moving. I kept want to shout at them that we have an African Amrican president. Literally African American.

Play Four. Lea and Cindy were crying at the end. Women of Locherbie. Plane was bombed in 1988. Play is set seven years later. The plot is driven by a woman roaming the hills looking for the body of her son which was never found. Eleven people killed on the ground, by the way. The women of Locherbie talk about the clothing of the passengers which is about to be destroyed. They want to wash it and return to the families of the dead.

People keep saying that the death of a child is the worst that can happen. Maybe when you are young and the child is young. At my age I feel that peope are dying all around me. I mourn my best friend from fifth grade on. I mourn Stormy whom I met in Arlington. My cousins are dying. [I think the death of a long time spouse is the worst. One would be more lonely.]

Another item is that people are dying all around me. Nobody answers the phone or the door and we call 911 to get the corpse.

Play Five. The evening ended on a comic note. Two guys driving together cross country have to share a bed. You can imagine the conversation.

And so we come to Saturday morning. Woke up at ten. We are going to the park. All I have on my plate is getting dressed for the play tonight. I think I will send this now. The dogs have nothing much to say yet.

The dogs got me up by 9 am. We are meeting Judy at the park at eleven. She has fabric to give me. Asked if I had a minimum size. Ha!!!
Apt to pull tooth on Monday at 11. It is tough chewing sans molars. I am grateful for molars.
Play at UTA tonight courtesy of John R.

Judy and I had a great chat about Dick Chaney's daughter and such like. Judy says she is a leftist but not radical. Liberty's mom turned up with news about Skippy the little dog I rescued. he is getting fat. Liberty set everybody barking. So we came home. It looked like rain and now the sun is shining.
Got gas and hit the library. Now for a nap.

I am sending this early bc I am going to UTA theatre with John and Lea. A series of one act plays tonight. Tomorrow a three act play.

Lady Chica's Tale
We spent two hours at the park today bc Mom was talking to Szabo's Mom. I mostly patroled the fence. Those cars need help to park in straight lines. I dont know what they do when I am not on duty.

Blitzen's Tale
No way to get out today. We spent two hours in the Small Dog Prk. I got put on time out about twice for pestering puppies. They dont need to bring those puppies to the park. wait until theyget some sense.

BOOK REVIEW
Didn't have time to finish a book today. I have three or four going.

Brave New World: science fiction: Skype rang and I answered to find my sister staring at me. video phone.

At 10 AM I got online and opened email. Juday had written that she would be in park at 10. So off we went. Immediately. I saw Judy in the far distance walking Szabo. Man was running lawn mower in small dog park. Decided to try Big Dog. Left the leash trailing with Blitzen. He immediately ran to the two places he got out. He has a memory!!! He tried each place. Ran along the fence checking. Then tried first place. No good. Tried second place and out he went. Went sparkling over the soccer field.

I dont know if he saw Szabo or what. He came circling back to the gate and came in. I took the dogs and went to meet Judy. We went into Big Dog park. I kept Blitzen on a leash and we sat in the shelter. Finally mower left and we went in Little Dog park. We stayed for another hour chatting. Both of us are radical leftists. So we were shouting about torture.

We left about noon. I took some fabric over to Paulette to leave on her porch. Her daughter teaches third grade in Keller. She wants to teach sewing, make pin cushions. Kids are low poverty and cant afford fabric and such. I am so happy to give away some fabric.

The sales associate cutting my fabric at Hobby Lobby suggested that when I die, instead of a wake the survivors can have a "stash party". Listen up, Martha.

NPR had an author, woman anthropologist who has a book speculating that speech arose from mothers talking to babies. Woman anthropologists speculate in different directions from men.

Watched the telly this evening. At least I could understand CSI. Then watched on PBS MI-5, a British movie. Went too fast.

Lady Chica's Tale
We had to go in the Big Dog side and I was scared. Blitzen was being a naughty boy. he got out of the field but he came back. Szabo's mom came and we talked.

Blitzen's Tale
Woo hoo I had a great time. We went in the Big Dog side and i remember where I could get out. Mom had my leash trailing but that didn't stop me. I went whipping around and came back. I know she gets upset but it is so much fun.
She kept watching tv tonight. I hate that tv.

8 am My foot is much better this morning. I dont need the cane altho I am still hobbling. Off to the dentist. I am just having a cast of my teeth. When the tooth is pulled, I will have a new partial.

NPR is having stories about Michigan. We have visited Kalamazoo and Detroit Museum of Art. Diego Rivera murals.

Well, it took fifteen minutes to make a cast of my teeth with partial in it. Then the lab will make a new false tooth on the partial. So I decided to drop by Senior Center to find out what day is Soup Day. It was today.
I played grocery bingo and won two cans of tomato sauce. I blend it with fresh or frozen vegies to make faux gezpacho. (Look that up in your cook book.) Martha: I blended all the vegies you sent over. The fresh tomatoes made it special.
Holiday Lane Assisted Living sends over a pot of soup once a month. Today it was vegetable with corn bread. Nice and low cal.
Persis: I did not eat the cake always present at Senior Center. Director goes to Kroger and gets free day old cake.

Took a nap. Clara (Benji's mom) came over to borrow a staple. Blitzen was being hospitable and brot her the remnant of his teddy bear to play with. She thot it was a dirty old rag. Fortunately, Blitzen thot she was playing and did not feel rejected. He was being so nice.
Temp is 88 degrees.

PPQS tonight. I did hand sewing on collars on some new shirts. Lea was sewing a nightie for her grand daughter. She has them pick out the pattern and the fabric. But she is getting behind and losing her grandmother license.

I came home and sat down at the computer. Skype rang, I answered and there was my sister looking at me via video camera. We had a nice chat. Just chit chat. The dogs are sound asleep. I dont think they have anything to add.

Lady Chica's Tale
We are going over to visit Pup today. Yeah.

Blitzen's Tale
Benji's mom came over for some reason and I brot my teddy remnant to play with her. She really doesn't understand how to play.

BOOK REVIEW
James Patterson, *Cat and Mouse*
Alex Cross police procedural, more or less. This continues the first Cross novel. The serial killer escapes from jail and goes on another rampage. Meanwhile Cross joins with the FBI to hunt down the "Mr. Smith" serial killer. Mr. Smith is named after the Martian in a cult novel from the sixties I cant remember.

April 21

Volunteered at Baptist Center this morning. It was chaos. Lots of new people who did not know the routine. We fed seven families. Turned away more.

Came home and took a nap. Then for a massage. This morning I hit my foot on a can, the edge of my foot. I have been hobbling around all day. Massage therapist looked at it. No bruise, no swelling. It hurst. I have been using a cane. Dogs to park. came home. Ready for a nap. 8:20 PM

BOOK REVIEW
Have not finished a book. Did not have time to read.
Gentle Reader AP: I almost always read the last two or three chapters of a scary book. I cant stand it otherwise. Also, I almost always check the last two pages. In the sixties, the spy stories all ended so weird.

Dental Appointment for cleaning at 10:30 AM

6 AM Up for a pit stop. Stiff from sitting for hours last night. Had to move to get circulation going.

Post Dentist. Well, I am going to be losing another tooth. I have to get my partial denture fixed. Add another tooth to my partial.

Came home and took a nap. Off to dog park. Shared a picnic table with a med student. Interesting. The man who wrote *One Nation Under Dog* thinks one important place for socialization is the dog park. Wow!!

Waiting to watch American Experience. Next week is "Trail of Tears", not to be missed. WKAR tv at 8 PM on Monday.

Tonight's episode was *Tecumsah*. Tecumsah was trying to get an Indian State in the Old Northwest. I just had an idea. Maybe the Indians can take over the Territory of Michigan when the round eyes all leave. The Pottawatamie were gardeners there.
The arboretum at Lansing had an exhibit of how the Pottawatamie lived. I saw a buffalo there.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom keeps talking about having a tooth pulled. I had four teeth pulled last time I went to the vet.

Blitzen's Tale
I almost massacred a white bull dog but Mom pulled me away in time to save him. Grrr. Mom got these new harnesses that I cant pull away from. Grrrrr. Grrr to you, Aunt Martha.

BOOK REVIEW
Richard North Patterson, *The Race*
The title has two meanings, a political race and the question of skin color. This is a fascinating book. Published in 2007 it is like a mirror image of the political campaign in 2008. It ends up with a black man, based on Colin Powell, nominated as candidate for Republican party.

I am working on *Eclipse*, Patterson's 2009 book. I don't know if I can finish. It is about Nigeria and the protagonist is hung in the last pages. It is worthwhile to even look at the book bc it is making me sensitive to the situation in Nigeria. There is just a recent news story about how MEND, the insurgents, have taken hostage some oil company workers.

April 19

Hit the snooze button four time, then turned off the alarm and went back to sleep. I woke from a vivid dream which left me feeling "eerie". I think it was a disguised memory.

My sister and I were visiting my young uncles, Reuben and Hermon, when they were young before they went into Army for WWII. [Actually this never happened bck Hermon lived in Detroit where he worked at Graham Paige, an auto maker. too small to rescue. Persis, did he room with Uncle Phil?
Reuben lived in Jackson where he worked for Burroughs who made little speed bumps that rose up in front of a traffic light when it turned red. The only person who ever heard of them was Stormy who seemed to think they still exist.]

In the dream there was a party or something. My mother had sent a message for me to read to Reuben. I started to read it, but it was not words. It was letters arranged to look like words, mostly consonants. I couldn't read it. then I woke up.

And so it goes at 10:34 AM. I have too much on my plate today to go to church.

We went off to the dog park. as we were coming home Allen called on his way to. Sorry we missed him. Some people recognized Lady Chica from her picture on Facebook.

I copy this journall onto my blog spot every night. Last night my blog spot was locked. I guess my comments about the governor were too caustic.

Leslie had a dinner party tonight. her boyfriend flew in from San Diego. He is fascinating. he learned to program when he was in high school in 1967.

Lady Chica's Tale
Aunt Martha brought over a harness to wear when we are out walking. I dont know what I thik about this. Mom thinks it is wonderful cuz it pulls straight up. Let's see what happens when Blitzen sees a bicycle.

Blitzen's Tale
On the other side today there were some big busters. Big. They looked like horses. There was our own little boxer who shows up a lot to race with us.

Here in Texas, WE WANT TO SECEED. The guy who plays Texas Ranger (Chuck Norris)wants to be prez.
Gov Perry talks about secession. He seems to forget that a lot of the current population of Texas are Yankees. We dont want to have to get a visa to visit our relatives up North.

I did not like CSI Thursday nite. I got confused. The story flipped from present to flashback to online. It was a spoof of Star Trek.

9:00 AM friday. A gentle all day rain is falling, good for the plants. A lot of lightning. I dont remember so much lightning in Michigan. I have errands to run. First to Hobby Lobby to get seals for scrapbook. Also some black scraps for my quilt. Imagine! having to buy fabric.

Fabricholics should not be allowed into a fabric store. Everybody is happy for the rain on the plants, but it sure is messy to get around.
The dogs were freaked out by unbrellas. Then my new neighbor moved in, , that is, the movers moved in, and the dogs were freaked out by the big things going by on dollies. My new neighbor is Pat.
Persis, is Oda Mae a German name? Her fa was German. She is always cooking cabbage in German ways.

I took two naps this afternoon. Walking around a huge store like Hobby Lobby is exhausting. I have done some cutting this evening.
Watched Bill Moyers Journal and chills ran down my back. His guest was David Simon who wrote and produced Wire, a program on HBO which I had never heard of. Simon talked about how he perceives America. I had chills bc I was teaching about this forty years ago. I was predicting where we are going. People tell me I have different insights. I just look at raw sociological data, not juked stats.

Lady Chica's Tale
This morning we had to bark off flying saucers. Mom says she does not believe in flying saucers but for sure they were going past our house this morning. Then there were men going back and forth with big things. We had to bark all these people off.
Mom says we have a new dog on the block, Cassie. She is little and timid.

Blitzen's Tale
Chica wrote about the flying saucers. For sure, we barked off flying saucers. And for sure they exist. Lots of stuff going on today. We never did get to the dog park.
Mom says there is a new chick on the block named Cassie.

BOOK REVIEW
Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, *Blood Sinister*
Interpreting the title would be a spoiler. It is a good title. Another Inspector Bill Slider, London police procedural (and Bill's complex love life). An investigative female journalist is found murdered. Unfortunately, the suspect list includes almost everybody in England, bc nobody liked her. One suspect after another is investigated and found innocent.

I was sleeping over the hullabaloo. Finally I figured out that the landscapers were here. At least they will be gone when I try to take a nap. And Blitzen did not go into a berserker rage.

I took benedryl last night bc I am allergic to Lea's cat. And I more or less slept all day. I had breakfast and then took a nap. I got up and we went to the dog park. The only person I knew was Ray. it is funny. He is a bitter "good old boy", a self confessed racist. ON the other hand I like him. He did most of the talking.

Came home and took another nap. The dogs made a hullabaloo. I think they just bark bc I am asleep. Now almost 8. I am waiting for CSI to come on.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom slept all day. What fun is that? We did get to the dog park. Not much doing there. Not many dogs.

Blitzen's Tale
Well, mom slept all day. When she is not up to keep an eye on us, we have fun. Lots of barking and running around. We did go to the dog park. Mom sat around talking to Ray.

BOOK REVIEW
James Patterson, *Along Came the Spider*, 1992
This was a movie in 2001. This is Alex Cross series. Alex is a PhD in psychology who is a homicide detective bc he could not make it in private practice. In this novel two rich children are kidnapped. It was a tangled complex.
I looked up Patterson in Wikipedia. This was his first novel, as well as first Alex Cross novel. I am amazed that Patterson has sold more books than anybody. By the way, Alex goes on and on with his career as a forensic psychologist.

Up and at em by 9 AM. Not much at em. Planning to sew today. My red and black log cabin lap quilt is beautiful. One block is almost complete. It takes 15 blocks. 12 " by 12"

My motto for the Tea Party is: LOW INCOME MEANS NO TAXES.

The day is proceeding. My neighbor, Russ, celebrated his birthday by washing the outside windows of the complex.

I did my stint of sewing. Took a nap. In late afternoon went over to Lea's. I spent the evening working on my scrapbook for Puerto Vallarta. Lea says from experience that one averages two pages per night.

Lady Chica's Tale
We went over to visit Pup again. There is so much to smell over there. There are nests of mice. I like to dig in the garden. Yeah.

Blitzen's Tale
Over to visit Pup again. I have fun burying treats and digging them up and burying them again. Lots of smells.

BOOK REVIEW
Richard North Patterson, *Private Screening* 1985
I seem to be reverting to the good old days. I liked mysteries better then before they got so violent and gross. Patterson's protagonist seems always to be a defense attorney. In this case, a presidential candidate is assassinated and Tony Lord gets him off on a plea of insanity (PTSD from Vietnam). Then there is another highly imaginative scenario. Good read for oldsters.

Blitzen hates television. Sometimes he barks at it to shut up. Usually when I pick up the remote to turn it on he runs and hides in his den under the bed.

Tuesday morning. Off to Baptist Center. I woke up just before the alarm, feeling refreshed.

We only gave groceries to seven families this morning. Slow morning. I came home and took a nap. went to dog park, mostly talked with Ray and Avery's dad. The president of Park Assoc has invited Bo Obama to visit our dog park.

So sleepy. 7 Pm Think I will turn off Nova and take a nap.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom was gone all morning and slept all afternoon. Dog park was boring today. Not many dogs on the other side of the fence. Nobody would run. I think it wolud be fun to meet Bo, the White House dog.

Blitzen's Tale
There was this chick I tried to hump. Her owner dragged me off and Mom put me on time out. Boring. Booooring.

No time to read today.

April 13

Up and down all night. I have messed up my sleep pattern but i guess it does not matter when one is retired. 55 degrees this morning. Off to purchase a new phone or--- the last two times the sales associates talked me into keeping my old phone.

I looked up Somalia on Wikipedia. It never has been a federal govt. The usual leftover from colonial Africa. There are lots and lots of tribal groups.

I bought a new phone. I AM BACK ON PHONE. I bought the cheapest I could find. It has a camera. One cannot get just a plain old phone. I know: there are special phones for old people but I use mine.
For lunch I stopped by the Salvadorean place nearby. I wanted to try something. fried plantains. They are OK. Brianna: next time we can get Mexican food two blks down the road.
Then Helen brot over cherry cheesecake. So much for the Pritikin book I just borrowed. I went on Pritikin in 1987 and brot my cholesterol down. They seem to have let up a little nowadays. It is the same principle as Dr. Ornish but not vegetarian.

I took a nap. Then my neighbor, Marilyn, came down to tell me we were having the birthday party tonight for Oda Mae and Russ. Marilyn and Helen went off to Sonic and bought hamburgers. Helen made a cake and furnished little containers of Blue Bell Icecream. We had a picnic out in front of Marilyn's house. Oh, yes, lemonade. So much for Pritikin and Weight Watchers. I came home so sleepy.

Watched the first episode of this American Experience and native Americans. Episode One dealt with the landing of the Pilgrims and ended with King Phillip's War. Told from the perspective of the native Americans. I taught history; so I knew all this, but tonight was an emotional experience.

Lady Chica's Tale
We never did get to the dog park today and not much exercise. Mom slept in as usual. Then she went off somewhere. She came back and took a nap. Then she went off down the sidewalk. We could hear her. She did bring us a little hamburger from the party. I like Oda Mae and Russ.

Blitzen's Tale
Well, we never did get to the dog park. Mom took us for about four walks just around. she sat outside for a while. She was sitting around with the neighbors eating. She did bring us a little hamburger. And later we got to clean up the potato chips that spilled on the sidewalk.

BOOK REVIEW
Ellis Peters, *St. Peter's Fair*
Another Brother Cadfael. Year is 1836. The Abbey of St. Peter and st. Paul in Shrewsbury holds an annual fair. That means people come to sell goods and people come to buy. A good place for spies. A man from the north who is loyal to Empress Maud comes to get a communication from a man from the south. Meanwhile a villain loyal to King Stephen tries to find the letter. And in the stew is a spy from the King of Wales. As always there is a young couple in love.
I saw the tv show of this many years ago. If it is on DVD or VCR I recommend it. It was shot in Hungary and looks so authentic.

Easter 2009

I skipped church this morning. I woke at 7 and it was raining. I went back to bed. At 9:30 the sky was threatening. I finally got up at 11. The sky is clearing.
The night was too much for me. About 3 AM I woke and the sky was pink from continual lightning. I kept reassuring the dogs that if we didn't hear thunder it was OK, that the lightning was far away. I had unplugged my computer so that I was not worried about that cooking. The rain came down in sheets. I kept hoping we would not get hail. All in all, it was a scary experience. Not rationally but emotionally.

We are not even going to the dog park today. I have had enough driving in the rain.

2 PM The storms are over, I guess. Temp is 55 degrees but it feels warm. I have the outer door open. Going to take another nap.
Portugese water dog is a distant cousin of the poodle. Like the poodle, Bo has hair rather than fur, thus cutting down on allergic reaction.

I lay down trying to take a nap. The dogs were restless. So I gave in and went to dog park. The temp was up to 66 degrees, the sun was shining. It was pleasant. The park was clogged with a convention of low riders. Not many dogs. I need to look up low riders.

Apparently low riders are just a fad. Chicano fad. I saw one car with suspension that could go up or down. I saw doors going up and lots of stuff. I couldn't understand why.

Lady Chica's Tale
I was awake last night and it was scary. I snuggled up with Mom and she kept saying it was OK but I didn't understand what she was talking about. We lay around all day and finally went to the park later. Lots of dogs were willing to race.

Blitzen's Tale
We lay around all day until I got fractious and talked Mom into going to the park. There were a lot of cars all over but not many dogs. We did find some to race with us.

BOOK REVIEW
Catherine Coulter, *Point Blank*, FBI thriller
What kind of book is this? The killer rides off into the sunset and we never find out where the sheriff's wife disappeared. Sherlock and Shiver are tracking serial killers, while Ruth gets hit on the head in a cave where she is treasure hunting. Later she finds a corpse.

April 11

MY CELL PHONE WENT OUT. Rough weather is predictied for tomorrow. If we have a tormado and you try to call me, my phone went out last night with a whoof.

Susan Komen Walk for the Cure. Lea W and I will be wearing our tee shirts. We can no long walk, non-metaphorically.

Up at 9 AM for breakfast. Back to bed to sleep in. i wont get a nap today.

Off to have lunch with Lea and Linda. The puppies were happy in Lea's back yard. Then Lea and I went off to Circle Theatre where we saw *Art*, a hilarious comedy. Three friends. One man buys a piece of abstract art which is textured white. His friend calls it shit. And they argue throughout the play.

Went home with Lea for ratoutille (sp?) -- egg plant soup. Oh, delish. As we drove home, lightning was beginning to flash. We are predicted to have a rough storm tonight.

Lady Chica's Tale
We spent the afternoon visiting pup. He is a good old boy. I chased birds and squirrels and mice. Sometimes I just lay down and smelled. Good day.

Blitzen's Tale
Visiting that old Pup again. I had fun burying bones. I like to bury a bone, then come back and dig it up and bury it again. Fun, fun, fun.

Have not had time to read.

April 10

Thursday evening. I missed CSI bc I had no tv guide. I have noted in my organizer for next Thursday that CSI is at 8 PM.

Smoke from the wild fires to the west of us blotted out the sun. The wind is strong.

Friday morning 10 AM I took two benedryl last night bc of the smoke. So I cant wake up. I may go back to bed.

Forced myself to get out of bed at noon. I do feel better and my head is clear.

Talk about forced march!!! First of all, I could not find my gift card for Claire's. I knew I had put it in a small coin purse. I hunted thru all my purses. Finally, I saw it looking at me from the top of a dresser. I parked at the far end of the mall. Thot a forced march would be good for me. Maybe so. This was not a day to go shopping. The mall was crowded. I did enjoy seeing the outfits people were wearing. I bought my ear rings

I came home and had to take a nap. I wanted to get to park early but was too tired. I was surprised that there was no soft ball game (clogging the parking lot) and few dogs. I had forgotten it was Good Friday. Lady Chica just lay on the table. So I came home.

Lady Chica's Tale
When we finally got to the dog park I was tired out from yesterday. I just lay around on the table. So Mom decided to come home. Blitzen and I made up for it by racing around the house.

Blitzen's Tale
This has been a dull day. Mom insisted on sleeping all morning. I finally dragged her out of bed. She went off somewhere. Then she insisted on coming home from the park. Let's hope tomorrow is better.

BOOK REVIEW
I have five novels and two non-fiction started. Tennyson Hardwick does this, with books on his night stand.

April 9

Yesterday I heard a man on NPR who is the pastor of an emergent church (Protestant). He thinks religion will change radically very soon.
I heard a talking head on NPR speak about the amount of info about science that is available, all kinds of programs on television. And I thot: younger generations are going to be saturated with science and cannot accept the Bible literally.
I am reading in National Geographic about people who are producing evolution. The key to change is turning genes on and off. Skin pigment has to do with the amount of time the gene stays on. We have about three pigments in our skin, homo sapiens, that is.

Thursday morning. Alarm rang at 9 AM. I have hair appointment at 11 am.

Thank goodness the landscapers came early. Now I can get a nap, after going to the Sunset Gardens birthday party.

A Gentle Reader sent me a story about the dog who survived on an island off the coast of Australia. Sophie is an Australian cattle dog, a blue (or red) heeler. I am convinced that the dingo genes trump every other gene. [Blue heelers are part dingo, bred to herd cattle.] When Lady Chica, who is half blue heeler, stalks a bird she stalks like a cat. They are more flexible than other dogs.
I wonder ---- Lady Chica is smaller than a sheltie (her mo) and looks like a mini blue heeler

Today I am convinced that the body snatchers have taken over the body of Lady Chica. She came up and told me she was ready to go home.

Lady Chica's tale
We really had a good run today. That little black dog, Baxter, was there. He can run almost as fast as I can. I think people have his picture. His mom and dad ride in on motorcycles with Baxter in a case.

Blitzen's Tale
I got those bums running today. We ran and ran and ran. Baxter was there helping.

BOOK REVIEW
William Tappley, *Death at Charity's Point*
This is the first Brady Coyne novel and it reads like it. I only got one quarter of the way thru. It is just too transparent.

Robert Crais, *Sunset Express*
Another Elvis Cole novel. A defense lawyer hires him to prove that the evidence against the defendent has been planted by the LAPD. The usual violence but little sex.

Addendum april 8

The dogs complained that they didn't get a chance to write. I am so tired. I forgot.

Lady Chica's Tale
Well, we finally got out of the house in the afternoon and went over to visit Pup. I just love Pup's back yard because there are squirrels in the trees and mice on the ground. I usually try to dig one of the mice up. Once there was a mouse in Pup's water dish.

Blitzen's Tale
We went over to visit Pup. That is a fun back yard with a lot of smells. Old Pup is a nice old guy. He is sort of old. He likes to have us visit. I think he has a crush on Lady Chica.

April 8

*Outliers* demonstrates why I call "race" in the U.S. a "caste". In Jamaica you have "blacks" and "coloreds". Colin Powell comes from a colored family. That to me explains his career, meaning that he would be raised with expectations.

Almost all African Americans in US are "coloreds". Barack Obama is a colored, almost a classic colored.

In the US, children took the caste of their mother. In some ways, Obama's caste is white. That is one factor in his ability to become president. He was raised white.

Wednesday morning 11 AM. deep sleep, almost 12 hours, courtesy of benedryl. I took one tab for allergy last night. I was up at 5 for a pit stop and never woke up. At eleven the dogs began playing tag on my supine body. The books dont cover dogs like mine who interact. We communicate.

The hardest task for me in the day is getting dressed bc it involves bending hips and knees. Getting a sock on my right foot is the Big Achievement of the day. It does not pay to live too long.
I have been fussing with my plants, watering and such.

Went over to join John and Lea in viewing their grandson, age 4, in a soccer game. Of course it is hilarious. Aubrey, the grandson, had no idea what he was doing. He just ran after the ball. We laughed and laughed and laughed.
Then John took us to dinner at Luby's. I stuffed myself and had to bring home my strawberry shortcake in a to go box.

BOOK REVIEW
Sue Henry, *Sleeping Lady*
Sleeping Lady is a mountain in Alaska. Alex Jensen is a state trooper who lives with Jesse the Iditarod musher. This book revolves around a sting operation on guides who violate federal rules, like chasing grizzlies with planes. An undercover Fish and Wildlife female agent is found dead and her pilot missing. We already know the bear ate him. I *mean* ate -- in the fall fattening up for hibernation. We get to know the bear. Well, Jensen solves the crime but --- you have to guess at the ending, the real solution, and you dont want to believe it.

I had a hard time getting into this book. The prologue deals from the bear's perspective of eating the pilot. I was upset when the bear was later shot. Good enuf for the pilot to be eaten!

April 7

Monday night. Watching the basketball game was heartbreaking for me and all the folks in MI. North Carolina was so obviously the better team. Actually Pres Obama had picked them for the championship.
I did have a chance to see Magic Johnson. He talked during the half.

Worked at the Baptist Center. We served seven families at the Food Pantry. We closed early to get lunch before the Lenten organ recital. Glorious. Broadway Baptist has this beautiful organ, one of the best in the country.
After the recital, I went down to sit with Nancy while she ate and I had a second dessert.

Lady Chica just pulled a bookmark out of a book and is eating it. paper seems to digest.

Came home to find a fed-ex pkg on my doorstep. A big box full of little boxes of Godiva chocolates from Sherry (my niece). Gotta write a thank you note.
Took a nap and off to the dog park. I was underdressed and cold all morning. At the park I was overdressed and too warm.
A man, homo sapiens, stood on the Big Side and trash talked Blitzen, holding up his dog. I think testosterone is testosterone, whatever the species.
A huge bird with a red bill swooped over the field. People with small dogs worry. I was told that one little chihuahua got hit by a pack of little dogs and was killed.

I caught Lady Chica again with a treat. Judy said it would not work twice!!!! She was tired.
Watched NCIS. What a diffeerence on a decent tv with HD. Since I moved to Arlington I have not had decent tv reception. Mayb the airport.

Lady Chica's Tale
I raced with this huge, huge white dog. He barked real low. Woof Woof. We never did get a pack going. Mom lured me in with a treat. Those treats from Martha are yummy, yummy.

Blitzen's Tale
This dog wouldn't fight. So his Dad held him up and said to me across the fence, "I'll get you. I'll just come over that fence and get you. I'm bigger than you." But the bum didn't respond.
I mostly let old Chica run today. I explored the perimeter.

BOOK REVIEW
Malcolm gladwell, *Outliers*
This is a fun book to read. Gladwell has collected various social science studies and amalgamated them into a synthesis in support of his thesis that success is not a matter of the individual but of the individual's culture, time of birth, social circumstances and being in the right place at the right time.
(As a sociologist/anthropologist I knew all this. Anybody who has taken Sociology 101 knows that social class rules all. I recd a new perspective on the social classes of my forebears. The other day somebody mentioned how brave my great grandmother was to come to America all by herself in a sailing ship when she was only seventeen.)
An outlier is somebody who is far out on the bell shaped curve.

I have decided to wear my MSU tee shirt to church.

And nobody much noticed. When I went to pay for my lunch, a man said, "Michigan State, the runner-up." kidding me. He said he was a Longhorn.
Came home and slept all afternoon. 5:15 PM Off to the dog park.

Lady Chica's Tale
Had a lot of fun racing the big dogs. Gave Mom a great race when we were ready to go home. I didn't even run. I can walk faster. I walked all over the field until she asked a man to help. He gave me a treat.

Blitzen's Tale
I got those bums running today. I let Lady Chica do most of the running.

Interesting segment on Bill Moyer's journal with two journalists given an award for --- not being in the mainstream media. They discuss how media IS the establishment. I agreed with every word. They talked about how people in DC dont know what is going on outside. I know tht from experience.
At least Obama is aware of this. When he was in IL he drove around the state just talking to people. Of course he cant do that now.
Why did Michelle wear a cardigan to visit the Queen?

Sat morning. I am going to drive over to a yard sale Leslie is holding. I wondered about using the energy. Driving takes a lot of energy at my age.

Leslie B has been having a yard sale yesterday and today. Her whole neighborhood is having yard sales. What a great idea!!! Leslie's sister was in town from CA to help Leslie pack. Leslie is moving to CA in May. I am sad.

Came home and took a nap. Then I was too tired to take dogs to dog park. So we all went over to visit Rocky. The dogs acted as if they had known each other forever. Rocky thot my two were a little strange. They didn't want to play. For a while Rocky followed the other two around. After a while Blitzen ws following Rocky. Blitzen found a rawhide bone belonging to Rocky and buried it in the back yard.

Martha called to tell me MSU won their game and will be in the finals on Monday. I couldn't get Martha's television to work. So I missed the game. I took another nap.

Lady Chica's Tale
This afternoon we went over to visit Rocky. He is a big dog but as sweet as he can be. I was scared of him and kept away. I explored his back yard. I didn't see a squirrel altho Mom had said there were squirrels there.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom took us with her to visit Rocky who is staying home all by himself. He was lonesome. He wanted to play but I am just too old for that. I kept him in line and he just joined our pack. I had fun exploring the back yard.

Jim Lehrer's thought processes are getting to me. I dreamed I was involved in a scheme of selling people the idea of a memorial after they died, like the Elizabeth Nall Memorial Bridge over the Straits of macknaw.

Friday morning 9 AM Up for a cup of coffee. DID ANYBODY RECEIVE THE FIRST BATCH OF DOG PARK PICTURES? Many were returned bc file was too big. Sun is shining. Temp is 45 degrees.

7 PM Just heard the Spartan fight song.
On the banks of the Red Cedar
Is a college known to all.
Spartan teams are always winning
Can those Spartans play football.

Smash right thru those lines of blue
Watch the points keep growing
Spartan teams are bound to win
They're fighting with a vim
Rah rah
Victory to MSC.

Well, first I went to senior center to pick up my sack from Food Pantry. I set it down for a few minutes and Marilyn thot it was hers. we had a hassle. Ended up laughing and laughing.
Came home and went to dog park. Lovely weather.
Couldn't figure out. Blitzen and Chica kept running back and forth and could not get the big dogs running. Finally some little dogs ran with a big black dog but mine just sat around. Lady Chica came up to me while I was sitting down.

Took my dogs home and drove over to take care of Rocky, Martha's dog. They have gone out of town. We went outdoors and played fetch for a while. That dog can catch the ball. I am a lousy pitcher but Rocky didn't complain. Then I went in and took a nap. My belief is that that comforts Rock. And so it goes.

Spartans play Connecticut tomorrow. I wore my tee shirt to the health fair at senior center and had a chat with a chiropractor. Michigan is in an uproar so NPR says.

Lady Chica's Tale
I did a lot of running but we couldn't get those big dogs running. There was a big old golden who wouldn't run. There was a cute little Spud dog, really cute, but he was too young to know what to do. I felt like a cougar.

Blitzen's Tale
Well, we couldn't get those bums running. I trash talked a lot. Some lady talking on a cell phone asked me to stop barking. Ha. it's a dog park, lady!!!!

Wednesday night I watched a documentary about Jerusalem. This clarified a point in Brother Cadfael's "The Leper of St. Giles". When the Christians captured Jerusalem during the first crusade, (in which Bro Cadfael participated), the Christians slaughtered all the Muslims in the city.

Thursday morning. I listened on NPR to the man at McGill Univ who is working on the creation of a chickensaurus. In other words, reversing evolution. Changing gene structure.

dragged myself up at 11 AM. Wind advisory today. My back muscles remember carrying the dirt yesterday. I may not go to dog park. Wind chill too strong.
I forced myself to my task for the day, treating the carpet where Blitz has been marking. It involves unloading and moving book case.

7 PM and I am tuckered out. We did go to the park and the wind was horrific. Between gusts it was pleasantly warm. I may take a nap.
The court case against the gov of Illinois sounds like a novel by Jim Lehrer.

Lady Chica's Tale
Nobody at the dog park. I like running all over the park with nobody around. A horse came trotting past the fence. A bridal path goes all the way around the back of the park.

Blitzen's Tale
None of those bums on the other side would come up to the fence. Too scared I guess. I don't know why. I can't jump that fence. We did have a chance to bark at a horse. he knew there was a fence.

April 1

Tuesday night. I am too tired even to read. I guess it is good to get some exercise. Blitzen comes back after 30 minutes, but I am so fearful he will be killed.
I watched PBS Frontline tonight about health care in America. I was uninsured for twenty years but I am healthy.

Wednesday morning. I am hobbling around this morning. I have tasks I want to do, hobbling tho I am. Temp will be highest at 3 PM.

Went to Dollar General and came home dragging a 20 pound bag of potting soil. Got the most urgent rubber tree repotted. it was in a pot with no hole at the bottom.
Took a nap. Martha came over to have me check on her new suit. She wanted a woman's eye and I am an expert on fitting.
Then off to the dog park. Gorgeous day.

On NPR I heard a man who has written a book, *One Nation Under Dog*. He believes dog parks are good places to socialize and meet people. Says there are politics of dog parks. One issue is humping. He says, "Dogs hump." Some parks ignore it and others are upset.

Lady Chica's Tale
We got a pack going on each side of the fence. That little black dog in the picture was there. He is faster than I am. I hate to admit that. We just spent most of the time going back and forth. Mom had to drag in the little black dog's mom in order to catch me to go home.

Blitzen's Tale
I really got those big bruisers going today. I just stand there at the fence and tell them what I would do if I could just get at "em over the fence. I guess I got enuf exercise tonight. I can just lie down.

BOOK REVIEW
Did not have time to read today. Too much going on. Chatted with a man at dog park and did not even read there.
