Lady Chica's Tale
There is a little dog around here who rides around in a golf cart. He barked this morning and we woke Mom up. So we left for the dog park at 8 am when it was cool. Only Szabo was there. And all the cars were parked. So I didn't get much exercise.

Blitzen's Tale
Ol Szabo was there at the dog park. He and I compete for pats around the big folks. Mom and his mom sat on a benh in the shade. I dont know what they talk about for so long.

Went to tai chi. When I got home, Lady Chica did not even wake up. Blitzen did a prefunctory greeting at the door.

Charlotte Elkins left a comment on my blog:
Years ago, there were a few mystery movies with Lou Gossett, Jr. playing Gideon Oliver as part of a wheel of movies--Columbo and BL Striker. Unfortunately, they didn't use any of the plots of my husband's books and so the only thing the movies and the books had in common was the character's name. The books are better! Glad you enjoyed Old Bones! Charlotte Elkins

The lawnmowers were here but I slept all afternoon. I seem to have day and night confused.

I have been ironing and sewing. Feeling good about achievements. Tonight I plan to watch *New Tricks* and *Waking the Dead* on PBS --- Channel 13, kera in dFW.

BOOK REVIEW
Stuart Kaminsky,*Bright Futures*
Lew Fonesca series. Lew is a chronically depressd process server who chronically gets into trouble. After his wife was killed in a hit and run in Chicago, Lew moved to Sarasota FL. He got in his car and drove until it broke down in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen. In this novel, two kids ask him to prove one of their friends innocent of a murder. Plot sort of weird.

Up and out to the dog park by 8:30. Blitzen had to go to the bathroom. He was impressive. he got me up and out and waited to go until we got there.
It was almost chilly. I was almost cold. Temp was 70 degrees.
We were all alone. Lady Chica loves haveing the field to herself. She runs around the edge. She had plenty of cars to park this morning. Softball tournament still underway.

Lady Chica's Tale
I had plenty of work to do today. Plenty of cars to park. No other dogs around. Mom got us out of bed and off to the park.

Blitzen's Tale
Mom and I took a walk around the perimeter of the Big Dog Park, lake Woof. She kept me on a leash bc I can escape. They have put new pipes under the edge. I wonder if I can still get out.

Thank goodness it is too wet for the lawn mowers. 11 AM I may take a nap.

And so I did for more than three hours. 2:24 PM and we have been to the dog park. LC came home, ate her breakfast lying down and just went to sleep in her cage. I had a dream that was a perfect romance novel. When the hero and I had grown old, he was a general.

At three I went over to sit with Helen for a while. My neighbor. She has a hearing problem. She is a rabid Democrat. So that is OK. We watched CNN which she had on with ---

6:50 PM I have done quite a bit of sewing today. I feel satisfied.

MI5 tonight.

I love Colin Powell. He suggested that Prof Gates and Officer Crowley needed adult supervision.

We were up and away and off to the dog park in time to chat with Szabo and Judy. I chugalugged coffee and did not touch my computer. Park was pleasant. Now 11:38 AM. I have paid my rent and put in a work order to have my toilet flusher fixed altho I fixed it myself. I need a new ---.
Sprinkles falling. High humidity. Maybe now a nap.

Not yet. Too busy. Maintenance man came and put a new stopper in toilet. Needs a new handle he will get. I got it into my head Framers Mkt opened at one. I discovered that it is open at two. Came home to wait. May lie down.

Attended AA Speaker Meeting tonight. Primary Purpose AA has a Wed nite StepSpeaker mtg. Usually the same person comes back year after year in the same month. He speaks every Wed of a certain month. Tonight was the fifth Wed of the month and the topic was Step Twelve. Mostly the speaker spoke of 12 step meetings he had gone on.
He told a joke which I think is so funny: Any old drunk can stagger into an AA meeting but you have to know somebody to get into AlAnon.
[AlAnon is for family and friends of alcoholics. Originally it was mostly wives. Nowadays about half of the members are parents of alcoholics.]

Blitzen paws the ground like a raging bull and this morning he spewed wet dirt all over my beautiful new white shoes -- white.

Baptist Center. Within the first half hour we had eleven families for the food pantry. Wow. This is the last week of the month. Altogether we fed 19 families. Some are families and some are single men.
Sue Cora who runs the pantry on Tuesday brings me goodies every week. Today she brot me oatmeal cookies with rasins and choc chips.

Came home and took a nap. Did some sewing. Temp is only 88 but humidity is high.

Dogs were restless and we went to dog park at six. Fortunately we went early bc there is a juvenile softball tournament going on. And parking grew more and more scarce.

Lots of big dogs were willing to race. Heat not too intense.

Lady Chica's tale
Lots of dogs were willing to race and buddy arrived after a while. Nothing out of the ordinary. Life is so routine these days.

Blitzen's Tale
Those big ol bruisers were willing to run tonight. We had a lot of exercise. Mom got upset when we were leaving bc I kept humping this little black dog. [At least the owners just pulled Blitz off. They did not get out of control.]

BOOK REVIEW
Aaron Elkins, *Old Bones*
Starring Gideon Oliver. I keep thinking there was a tv program years ago. This book was published in 1987. It took too long to find the corpse in the basement but after that the going was great. Set in an estate in France. One victim died when he drowned in the tide in front of Mont St. Michel.

I woke from a dream that I was washing lab equipment and flirting with a crime investigator. That book on the flu is getting to me. It's full of men in the lab trying to find a serum. My sister spent years in a lab working on a vaccine for polio. Persis, you need to read that book. *The Great Influenza*

The sun is not shining. A dream come true. temp is 81 degrees. We apparently had more rain. The sidewalks are wet.

Spent our Monday chat at Wendy's with Judy. She told me about the report on the woman who called police on Skip Gates. Not a neighbor, a passing stranger. We discussed the Gates affair up one side and down the other.

Then I went over to the Cuban sandwich shop for a sardine sandwich. I could make them myself. Never thot about it. Long ago the day care center director was aghast bc I was feeding Martha sardines for breakfast. They have a lot of nutrients.

Took a nap. Sometimes I wake up from a nap thinking it is morning and wondering what day it is. Had a good nap. I can breath today. I assume ozone is down.

We went to the dog park at five and only Ray was there with Heidi, Maggi and Charlie. My dogs were bored out of their minds. Lady Chica lay on the table in the shelter. Blitzen ran around barking at every dog entering Big Dog Park. Finally Holly came with Gracie and then others. Blitzen kept trying to hump so we came home.

Lady Chica's Tale
Gracie's Mom brought us some bones. Gracie eats the meat off and we get the bones to chew. Nobody was at the dog park and I was bored.

Blitzen's Tale
Nobody around to race today. Nothing much going on. When I was trying to hump a couple guys Mom decided to come home. She is such a spoil sport.

BOOK REVIEW
Abigail Padgett, *Straw Girl*
Bo Bradley is a CPS worker in San Diego, CA. I like the book as a whole but her motivation for the villain is always weird. A child is murdered and Bo is sent to find the sibling to protect her. Much insues.

July 26, 2009

I went to bed early for me at eleven. Still tired this morning. Up early enuf to get to Sunday School. Humid this morning. I am sweating at the computer. 82 degrees.
In Sunday School we did lectio devina. Read and meditate. We did that in my women's studies class at TCU.

On the way home from church I was remembering the time I was threatened with arrest on an airplane (last September). I was being too loud and got angry. I was trying to get attention of flight attendent. A horrible fat man was hitting me with his elbow. I was given a solemn paper that declared me in danger of arrest. (Two police were waiting outside the door of the plane.)

I am not so sure how much of the Gates affair was *racial profiling*. The man is 58. I think that there is *elderly profiling*. Anyhow, I have been identifying with Prof. Gates.

One of my Readers suggests that professors of black studies at Ivy League colleges are full of themselves. I will state categorically that full professors of anything anywhere are full of themselves. I dont blame them. It is a long tough climb to be a full professor.

Wikipedia has a full article on the Henry Gates arrest. Part of the problem I think is that Skip Gates assumed racial profiling immediately. I think he was out of line but I identify with him. I was on campus during the sixties when the Illinois State Police were brutalizing students. One class period students came to class bloody from a riot.

****************** At that point I took a nap. And Lady Chica had to wake me up bc I guess they wanted supper. I think I slept three hours. I think I hear the tornado siren sounding. We are supposed to have showers tonight. temp now is 97 degrees, real feel 102.
I am wearing a dress where I sewed the pocket too low. I need to replace it.
Itinerary for tonight: read until 6 or 7 and off to dog park.

Well, I was typing on this when the innernet went out and I lost a paragraph. We went to dog park where we had half an hour before the rain started. We managed to make it home and into the house before the downpour. Lady Chica hid behind the couch where she could not see the windows. She does not like lightning.
The park was too funny. Buddy got away and into the small dog park in order to play with Chica. I got her on a leash whereas Buddy and Blitzen went charging off around the park.

Lady Chica's Tale
I dont like that light that Mom calls lightning. I hid back of the sofa where I couldn't see it. I was jittery at the dog park. I can feel it coming.

Blitzen's Tale
All that jittery electricity in the air charges me up. I had a great time running with Buddy. he's a good ol boy.

I came home and read some more in The Influenza. I have to take a break. The author is so technical. I read another book a while back but at that time they did not know what the virus was like.

BOOK REVIEW
Michael Connelly, *City of Bones*
Heironymous Bosch. At the end of this book Harry retires from LAPD but we faithful readers know he returns after three years. In this book a dog finds a human bone and a body is unearthed after 17 years. A boy of 12. First he has to be identified. Then the killer found.

Connelly emails me that he has a new book coming out, something about Dragons. I think Bosch goes to HongKong to take care of his daughter.

A talking head on PBS suggested how we could get single payer health insurance. (Single payer means government) Slowly by increments lower the Medicare age. First lower to 55. Then as people got used to that, lower to 45. And so on until everybody is covered.
Private insurance companies are still involved in Medicare. Govt pays them.

I see that Prez Obama plans to vacation on Martha's Vineyard. Too bad that the chronicler of Vineyard Mysteries has gone to that great dancehall in the sky. A colony of wealthy blacks has long summered on the Vineyard.

10 AM. leisurely awakening. The thread tension on my sewing machine has settled down and I plan to sew up a storm. I wish NPR had something I wanted to listen to on Sat. I hate Car talk. Lake Woebegone does not come on until five. Prairie Home Companion

I sewed pockets on my summer dresses (beach dresses). I have a fanny pack but I prefer pockets. I also have a bib like thing from the Congo.

At seven we went to the park. Temp is 99 degrees. In the dark. Ken, Judy and Szabo were there. we talked until almost nine.

Lady Chica's Tale
I slept most of the day. Sleepy days of summer. We went to the park tonight. I ran the fence off and on. Buddy and the white dog were both there.

Blitzen's Tale
As usual, we went to the park and Mom was threatening "Time Out". She even hit me once. Said her hand hurt worse than I did. I didn't hurt at all. Ol Szabo was there. He and I double team those dogs.

BOOK REVIEW
Jefferson Bass, *Carved in Bone*
The Body Farm is a research project attached to the Univ of Tennessee. Dr. Bass who originated the farm is one of the authors of this series. Corpses are laid out or buried at various depths and are monitored for decomposition. In this book, Dr. Brockton (fictional) is called to look at a body found in a cave. This is an incorruptible. Under certain conditions a body turns into something that is between soap and fat. Dr. B must identify her and then find her killer.

*Bones of Betrayal* is the most recent book in the series. Dr. B is called on to cut a body out of the ice of a swimming pool. He finds that the victim was killed by swallowing a pellet of highly radioactive material. The pathologist doing the autopsy is severely burned. A story within a story is the story of Oak Ridge, Tenn, where the atom bomb was developed. The victim was one of the early physicists who developed the bomb.

July 24, 2009 Part Two

By the time I got to the Senior Center the pancakes were all eaten. On various days nursing homes bring food as advertisements. Survived tai chi. Went Krogering. On the way home, Martha (my daughter) called. We chat as she drives home from Laredo where she has worked all week. She recounted last weekend in Green Bay where she was planning her wedding.
Her wedding is May 1, 2010 in Green Bay, WI. Martha said she was chilly bc temp was only 60. She couldn't wear the clothes she had packed.

I have had one response to my tirade this morning. I clearly identify with the professor, the academician. Mark Shields on PBS thinks the whole incident is a disaster bc everybody has spent the day talking about the incident rather than about health care.
One suggestion was that Obama spoke deliberately to start a discussion of racial profiling.

We went to dog park at 6:30. Off to Bill Moyer's journal. Health care again. He is preaching to the choir. Not much going on at the dog park.

Lady Chica's Tale
My tummy has not been feeling good today. I didn't even eat anything. A huge chunk of that funny stuff (filling of a comforter) was stuck in my tummy. I ran a lot at the park.

Blitzen's Tale
Laid around today. We had two evenings at Pup's. We get a lot of exercise. We went to the park tonight but not much was happenin.

BOOK REVIEW
John Barry, *The Great Influenza*
I have read thirty pages in this. It is not easy reading. We begin with the history of medicine. I have read an earlier book on the flue pandemic but we have learned so much during the last ten or twenty years. about DNA and viruses.

Robin Henig, *A Dancing Matrix*
I am reading this for the third time. I think anybody concerned about the latest swine flu needs to read this to learn about flu virus.

July 24, 2009 Part One

Alarm rang at 9 AM. Temp is 81 degrees. I am not oriented yet but energetic.

I am angry about the arrest of Prof. Gates but even more bewildered about the behavior of that policeman. He did not seem to be able to profile for social class. The police chief of Southfield MI was on PBS. He said that training was needed. He said times have changed. I think he was talking about social class.
I have just read a commentary supporting the police officer. Mostly I blame the idiot neighbor woman who called the police. I do believe that was racial profiling.
I must admit Prof Gates should have known better. I kept drilling my students (in the days of the riots and hippie profiling) to be polite to the police. Be polite to the police.
But Prof Gates was a full Professor at Harvard. As such he sits on the right hand of God. Lea quoted somebody on NPR as saying that "authority met authority"
Even as a lowly instructor I expected respect from others. The hardest thing for me when I left academia was that I got no respect.

BOOK REVIEW

Lindsay Chamberlain forensic archaeologist. Lindsay goes around burial sites determining what skeletons died of. She is on vacation when a woman begs her to investigate the caving death of the woman's brother. Of course the killers lock Lindsay in a cave. The dogs began to go beserk. I was sleeping so well I slept thru a lot. Finally I remembered that today is Thursday and these are the lawnmowers. They leaped into bed with a thump and one on each side demanded that I pet them. Finally we all went to sleep --briefly before they came back. I was hungry. So I got up.

Where has the day gone? I did some sewing. Oh, yes. I made bread but it was a failure. I knew my yeast had expired but I tried it and the bread is just hunks. Took a nap. While I was napping we had a small shower which watered my plants. Made a library run bc I had five books on hold. I order them on line from the Metroplex.
Smithsonian had an article I wanted to read on Neanderthals but Richland Hills somehow did not hve July issue.
Now I am off to Lea's. We are going to present our quilt to Trish. Trish is a librarian friend of Lea (who once worked at Central Arlington). We are just giving it for love.

It was a satisfying experience. Then I stayed for supper. We had fresh asparagus and sweet corn. Yeah summer!!!!

Lady Chica's Tale
Had a great time at Pup's. Plenty of squirrels to chase. John feeds the birds and squirrels and mice. There is a family of mice that lives under the tree but I cant catch them.

Blitzen's Tale
Lots of things to investigate in Pup's back yard. He is so lucky to live there all the time. We just live in this stuffy old house. With a little trip to the dog park once a day.

Watched MI5 tonight. I enjoyed tonight's episode. And I was so glad Will is united with Zoe in Chile.

9:30 AM Up feeling energetic. Only 79 degrees this morning. I plan to spend the day sewing. Working on my lap quilts. sewing the blocks, red&black, two black and whites.

I did laundry. Then I managed to figure out how to thread sewing machine and thread bobbin. I still dont have the tension correct. With a singer one has to change bobbin tension with a screw driver. I am sure one can be more precise.

This evening we went over to Lea's for PPQS. Lea trimmed my red and black log cabin blocks. She has a block to use, a plastic block for cutting 12 1/2" square.

Blitzen and Lady Chica are asleep. They are too tired to write.

Baptist Center. Six families came in at the beginning. Whew. Altogether we have served 21 families and three more have called since Food Pantry closed.

It is strange. When I come home I expect to find a different email -- not the same old. The dogs were happy to see me. We took a long nap all snuggled up together. I dreamed a perfect detective story but I did not have a killer. Only 93 degrees today. A cool spell.

We went to dog park where we met Mark F who gave us a sack of books he has just purchased. He keeps wanting me to read serious books.
Tired tonight. Maybe I need more water.

Lady Chica's tale
Had fun running the fence tonight. Some hound dog and then Buddy showed up. It's good to be with Mom again.

Blitzen's Tale
I've been lying around sleeping today. Getting old. takes longer to recover. (I hear Mom saying that about herself.)

Oh, yes. I found out that MaeCora who is in charge of Food Bank on Tuesday is 92 years old. She doesn't look a day over 75. I still cant believe it. There is hope, guys.

BOOK REVIEW
Beverly Connor, *A Rumor of Bones*
First novel in Lindsay Chamberlain series. Lindsay is a forensic anthropologist, as is the author. I love these books about forensic anthropologists, altho I think the fad is over with. Up at 9 even without the doglets. I miss them so much. Lingering aftereffects of antihistamine. I dread, dread, dread taking the car in. Short shower of rain. Rolling thunder in the distance.
Reciting AlAnon slogans to dispel the blues. I have had five or six offers of help. Friends care.

I walked home and I had two offers of a ride. And I had to argue with the shop owner to let me walk. I took the car up the road to Friday Car Repair. The radiator is gone, water just gushing out. It should be fixed today.
I am feeling so much better. At least I know what the trouble is.
I walked home. It is cool and just sprinkling. Feels so good. I wanted to prove to myself that the car is within walking distance.
I was really bummed out about the car. Without a car one is helpless in this area. Altho I can get a Rider Request bus to the mall.
I moved here bc they had a van going to Walmart twice a week but with the gas price a year ago all that is stopped. We have five or six vacancies and everything is ----

After that I took a nap. I am so energized with the cool weather. Only 81 at 5 PM. I am changing sheets and cleaning house. The car is almost fixed. Mechanic will give me a ride. Then I am going to go get the piglets.

Neighbors brot me some watermelon. Neighbors are having car problems. I think it is the terrible heat. Stresses the car.

I am fascinated reading the dust jackets of the first books of authors who become popular later, such as Tony Hillerman who is now an icon.

I finally got my car at 7 PM. The mechanic put in a new fan for the radiator. All in all, I am happy with the results. Drove over to Lea's and picked up the dogs. They seem to think coming home is just ordinary.

Lady Chica's tale
Well, she finally came and picked us up. I dont know what the holdup has been. I have had a good time and today was just great. Nice and cool.

Blitzen's tale
Well, we're home. Today has been nice and cool. Sorry to say goodbye to Ol Pup. Maybe he is glad to have us leave him in peace. He never says.

9:30 AM I missed the dogs last night but it is fine in the morning. no harassing me to get up. I feel kind of beat up.

Noon. I took the car out. Planned to drive around the block but got lost bc streets curved or something. I made it home as it heated up again. Definitely something wrong. Will take it in tomorrow morning.

Reading. Reading sewing machine manual. Took a nap. 4 PM thunder in the distance. Thunder is rolling.

We only got a few drops of rain. We seem to be on the fringes of storms. I took another nap. I took an antihistamine bc my eyes were itching. So I am still sleepy. I turned on Mystery Theatre -- Agatha Christie but watched only five minutes. I did not like Miss Marple.

July 18, 2009

4:30 AM I woke from a terrible dream. I was in a Muslim country giving a concert that had something to do with the oppression of women. I was playing some kind of instrument which consisted of my blowing into a tube, attached to a computer or something. In front of me was a page from a magazine with little pictures of women's heads. Each of them was a martyr. The first set went fine. This was in the morning, being broadcast on television or radio or something. We broke for lunch. When we returned some child had been playing at my desk. The magazines were all mixed up. We couldn't find the pictures. Then the system wouldn't work. No sound came out. At first this producer blamed me. Then other people tried and it was obviously the system. Then I woke up.

At 4 I was alone in bed. At 7 the dogs had infiltrated. At 9 a moving van pulled up. I am now out of bed. {When the van pulled up, of course the dogs began to bark. Strange men are taking away my neighbor's furniture.} My dogs are fulfilling their obligation: watch dogs. I want them to be watch dogs.

I saw that I had 8 books waiting. So I made a library run. Thank goodness. see below.

We got ready and went over to Lea's. The dogs stay there while we go to Circle Theatre. As we pulled in to park, the radiator steamed. It was over heated. Well, we went on to the theatre. The play was hilariously funny. It took place in a monastery in 1200. The monks are selling bones all over as if they are saints relics. Really funny. Altho a devout Catholic might be upset.

We bought some water at Barnes & Noble and found the radiator needed almost a gallon of water. I had not paid any attention. I dont take my car in for oil change so often bc I am using some kind of oil. Well, we set forth for Lea's. By the time we got to Handley, east of Ft. Worth it was overheating again. I called AAA who towed me home. Lea called John and hopefully she went home. The dogs will be staying over at Pup's.

My hope is that the car will come back to normal. There is a little repair shop across the street where I will take it Monday.
I will just sleep in tomorrow. No car, folks. Margie Treadgill will be worrying that I am taking my letter to another church. (That is what baptists do: take their letter)

Mark F: If you talk to Ron you can tell him I had car trouble.

Fortunately I made that library run this morning. Eght books to read and they all look good. That should hold me for a day or two. If I really got desparate I could walk to the library. Probably a mile.

It rained! It rained! It rained! 2 AM Just a short shower but it did water my plants.
Actually we got very little. Plants under the crepe myrtle canopy did not get wet. We were on the western edge. Arlington got a good shower.

Alarm rang at ten. I am running late for tai chi. No chance for snack before. Senior Center gets day old cake from kroger and other stuff.

Tai chi was just starting. We had a good time. Lots of laughs. Had banana pudding and pizza. 18 points at noon. (My goal is 20 points. Maintenance at my weight is 34 points. I need ten points less per day to lose one pd per week.)
Over to Town Talk, a discount grocery. I buy dog food there and other exotic things. Eggs laid by cage free hens. Lots and lots of yogurt, plain and fruited. One last block of cheese with blueberries. I crave it.
I have found a homeopathic arthritis rub, Zeel. I bought five tubes today. I looked it up online. It works. I have tried it.
I had to wait for a train and sweat was pouring, literally pouring down my face. I have to change clothes from the skin out when I get home. Temp is only 84 but high humidity. Temp rose to 100.

Took a nap. Woke and finished hemming witch quilt. Finally finished one project. Now I can play with my new sewing machine. I was determined to finish project.

Lady Chica's Tale
Buddy and I raced a lot tonight. Lots of big dogs raced.

Blitzen's Tale
This little tiny Chinese dog tried to hump me. Mom laughed and laughed and said it served me right.

Blitzen barks at big dogs when they are on the other side of the fence. he is quiet as a mouse when we are outside and the big dogs are not on leash. Fortunately I think the big dogs were gentle despite being boxers.

Watched *new Tricks* -- that seemed to be an old, old rerun. Also *Waking the dead*. I used something, cant remember the name of it. The dialog is at the bottom. I understood better.

I cant help but mention politics. Texas cant meet the demands of unemployment compensation. People will get delayed checks.!!! And our governor turned down federal stimulus money.
My massage therapist's new favorite song is:

God is great,
Beer is Good,
People are crazy.

Yesterday our new pastor appeared in the Baptist Center. For a minute I thot he was one of the homeless coming for a sack lunch. He is not prepossessing.

Wednesday morning. Up at 7 for breakfast. Then back to bed.

At ten Martha (my daughter) woke me bringing my bday present: a new Singer sewing machine. Yeah. She went home to pack for a trip to Green Bay WI for a wedding. Temp at 10:15 am is 86 and rea feel is 90. It is much cooler today.
At 1:45 temp is only 97. I can keep the house cool today. Yesterday the AC couldn't keep it cool. I cannot get oriented today. Time to go to the farmer's market.

Only 101 this afternoon. I took another nap. Off to PPQS, Lea and John. I met Lea and John at the Unitarian Church where I was a member for ten years. John was and is the facilitator of a support group at the Church.

Lady Chica's Tale and Blitzen's Tale
What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's.

Truly I have no idea what they do there. John gives them a treat and Blitzen buries his. Then he digs it up and buries it in a different place. I dont know what that is about.

BOOK REVIEW
Tony Hillerman, *Blessing Way*
First Joe Leaphorn novel, published in 1970. So strange to visualize Leaphorn as a young man not to mention a pic of Hillerman on the dust jacket. Blessing Way is the sing given Leaphorn and his cousins when they went off to Nam. I think he was a Marine. In this novel an Enemy Way is held to send back to a witch his poison. Leaphorn believes in evil people.

The dust jacket answers a question I have long had: how can Hillerman be so into Navaho culture. Well, as a kid he went to grade school as a day student at a boarding school for Indian girls.

BASTILLE DAY

Set alarm for 7:30 AM. Off to Baptist Center. Another blistering day.

We served 17 families at the Food Pantry. The Center was closed last week. So there was a backlog. I came home and took a nap.
Massage this afternoon. With the heat all of my joints are flexible.

Took another nap and we went to dog park at 7. Lady Chica and Buddy saw each other and happily ran up and down the fence once. Then all the dogs lay down in the shade. Eventually Lady Chica came up and wanted to go home. (She knows that when she comes up I put on her leash and we go home.)

Lady Chica's Tale
Buddy and I were happy to see each other. We didn't feel much like running. Mom says temp is 97 at 9 PM. It was 105 this afternoon.

Blitzen's Tale
Didn't do much running tonight. It is just too hot. LC and I slept all day.

Alarm rang at 10 AM. Off to Wendy's to meet Judy. I spent the night herding chickens. I dont really know what the object of it was. Somehow there was a contest and score keeping. Temp is 88. Heat advisory still in effect.

Judy and I spend two hours at Wendy's. We cover every subject under the sun. We discussed the efficacy of therapy. My choice is cognitive therapy. (AlAnon is mostly cognitive therapy in my opinion. The slogans.) I shared with Judy the first half page of my Memoir. Judy's initial reaction was how primitive the life we led in rural Michigan when I was growing up.

Then I made a library run. Going back to read the early Tony Hillerman books. Took a nap.
5 PM The temp is now 105. Heat index is 105. The home air conditioner is not strong enuf to help much in this heat.

We went to the dog park at seven. Not bad in the shade. Dogs mostly lay around in the shade.

Lady Chica's Tale
Buddy was there tonight. We sort of ran a little but it was too hot to run. There were two wading pools.

Blitzen's Tale
Too hot to do much running. I had fun puddling in the two wading pools.

BOOK REVIEW
Michael Connelly, *The Last Coyote
Harry Bosch the lone policeman. The novel ends with harry's house demolished bc of the earthquake and his job in jeopardy. Meanwhile he has found his mother's killer.

July 11, 2009

I spent the night crawling across the rice paddies of Bataan peninsula or hiding in the jungles of Vienam. I am tired and sore. Also depressed.
Last night I watched Bill Moyers, once more a talking head on health care reform and the power of the insurance companies. In my opinion the only hope for reform is grass roots organization. I was inspired by the documentary about the women of Liberia.
I think the seeds may be the doc in the box in CVS and Walmart (altho not in Texas) TX requires an MD not a nurse practioner.

At noon I took a nap. All I want to do is sleep, and the dogs bark at me to take a nap. Truly. Temp is only 95 but feels like 107. It must be the terrible humidity.
At 2:30 PM I have finished one long side of the hemming. The place is so quiet. Everybody is inside. Temp is now 97. Feels like 1097.

I slept again. Temp is 100. The day lingers on.

at 6:30 Blitzen began barking at me that he wanted to go to the park. So we went. It was still warm. Lady Chica and Buddy saw each other simultaneously and began racing. They raced and raced and raced. Blitzen raced, too.
We had not been there long when Ken, Judy and Szabo appeared. Szabo is a white American Eskimo dog. He and Blitzen are both dominant dogs. They sort of ignore each other.
We sat around for an hour or so.

Lady Chica's Tale
We slept all day. It was hot. Buddy was at the park tonight and we had fun racing each other. Szabo turned up, too, but he never races.

Blitzen's Tale
We had fun at the park tonight. Lots of big bruisers were racing. None of the other little dogs seems to get the picture. One little puppy kept getting in the way and getting stepped on.

BOOK REVIEW
Bart D. Ehrman, *Misquoting Jesus*
The story behind who changed the Bible and why. Written for lay people who dont know Greek nor Hebrew. Fun style for easy reading. I knew a great deal of the content, but I had not thot about how often the manuscripts were copied. Over and over and over by hired professionals.
I was never a believer in the inerrant Bible. The author tells how he went from a born again teen ager to a professor.

The alarm sounded at 7 and I reset for 9. Off to tai chi. I think I read too many thrillers. I spent the nght acting out thrillers. Another heat advisory.

Blitzen was peeing on empty this morning. I guess he used it all up at Pup's. I got Food Bank and did tai chi. Ready for a nap. Shall I eat lunch? I am hand sewing the binding on our latest quilt, witches for Trish.

Reader asks what is "wet work"? Euphemism for assassination. Special Ops do wet work Last night one of our good characters cold bloodedly killed a scientist working on the plague.

More and more is coming out about Michael Jackson. Reportedly he took 10 xanax per night (at times 30 or 40). Even Dr. Gupta on CNN is amazed. I take three naps and sleep all night without anything. If I take an anti-histamine it is worse.

I am horrified. The Chairman of the State Board of Education in Texas believes in creationism. Horrors. Horrors. Horrors.

Blitzen manifested new behavior. Lady Chica was sitting beside me on the couch. Instead of standing and barking, Blitzen leaped onto the back and snuggled down behind us. He likes to hide under things.

Blitzen's Tale
All night Mom gets up and down, up and down, up and down. I have to get up to check on her. I just wish she would sleep all night.

Well, I decided that dogs needed exercise and went to the dog park. Lady Chica and Buddy saw each other and instantly began racing. You should see LC run. The park was pleasant in the shade. Came home.
Bill Moyers was talking about health care reform. His programs depress me. He has talking heads telling about the insurance companies. Then I watched "Old Tricks" and "Waking the Dead".

BOOK REVIEW:
James Grippando, *Intent to Kill*
Novel of suspense I read nonstop. recommended for thrillheads. Ryan James is a minor league baseball player whose wife is killed in a car crash. On the third year anniversary somebody leaves a message, "It Was not an Accident". I never did figure out why that started at that time. Anyhow...
Anonymous tip follows anonymous tip. Two more people are killed. What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.
The novel ends happily. Ryan had dropped his career when his wife was killed. Now he started again. The epilogue has Ryan hitting a home run in his first appearance at Fenway Park. Note to Readers: Ryan was playing for Red Sox.

I woke at seven and immediately set forth with the dogs on a forced march. The sun was obscured; so it wasn't too bad. We returned just as the lawn men pulled up. I cant control Blitzen outdoors with lawn noise.
8:47 AM Temp is 81 with 106 predicted. Yesterday official temp hit 102 and that is at DFW in the shade.

Up so early, I took a mornng nap. Got up at noon. Temp is only 90 degrees. New prediction: showers this aft. No showers so far. 4 PM temp 100 degrees. I took another nap. Still sleepy. PPQS tonight. Lea is finally back from visiting her kids in Alaska.
Lea and John are my friends.

Lady Chica;s Tale
We're going to visit Pup! Ha ha. We're going to visit Pup Ho ho!!!

Blitzen's Tale
What happens at Pup's stays at Pup's.

Lea and I are finishing up a quilt she mostly did. she recounted her adventures in Alaska. She went paragliding over a mountain. My goodness.
I raced home in order to see MI5. That was a bit much. We actually saw an instance of wet work.

BOOK REVIEW
Bill Crider, *Too Late to Die*
The first Sheriff Dan Rhodes of Blacklin County, Texas, police procedural. The scene is rural Texas. There is always one murder which the sheriff must solve. Lots of local color

I slept deeply last night. At six, lady Chica woke me with barking, but with a different sound. I went in the study to find that she had knocked over a chair and blocked herself in. (The chair was overloaded with tee shirts. I wish I could bring myself to take some to the Baptist Center.)
After that, there were noises until the alarm rang at 8. I have a headache, probably orange ozone. Off to dog park but I hit the snooze button and it is 9 am.

I dawdled until we reached the park at 10:15. The dogs did run a lot. Good oh. temp is 93, real feel 103. It is so humid.
Listening to talking heads on NPR: I never realized Google has those ads. It never percolated. I also learned how it is that things like Skype can be free. The cost of the free is so minuscule that selling extras can make a profit.

Took a long nap. I slept so hard. Feel rested. Dashed over to Farmer's market. Four vendors. I bought tomatoes and cukes. It is sort of disappointing but I am happy to have what we have.

Lady Chica's Tale
I really ran full out this morning. I guess it was the breeze. I got all wet and then drying off was cooling. Flaked out all afternoon.

Blitzen's Tale
I really ran all out this morning. Flaked out this afternoon.

Had dinner at Outback with Leslie B. Leslie B is a friend of mine, has been for ten years or so. Leslie was trained as a linguist, now develops online learning programs. Tonight we discussed the future of China. The present generation of young folks is predominantly male. I had thot about the importation of women but I had not considered the psychological consequences of few women around. (Aha, Mark Farmer. Here is your experiment.)
The economic consequences of declining population.

I think I am ready for another nap.

BOOK REVIEW
Jenna Blum, *Those Who Save Us*
Not my usual read. I was given the book. It is a novel about a woman finding out about her mother. The beginning is Germany from 1940 to the end of the War. Trudy is born. Her mother marries an American soldier at the end of the war and emigrates to Minnesota. In 1996 Trudy, now Dr. Swenson a history prof, begins a Project, interviewing Arayan Germans who lived thru the War. An intense novel. It leaves me feeling "weird".

Baptist Center is closed. They are using the space for Vacation Bible School. I woke before the alarm rang at 8 AM. The dogs wanted to get up as soon as they knew I was awake.

One bench at the park was in the shade and cool. Texas sun is always hot. I often wonder what Van Gogh would have thot had he made it as far as TX. He was so excited over the south of France whose latitude is north of TX.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom took me thru that dumb agility course. I tried to get away but she stepped on my leash. She cheated. Not bad in the shade.

COMMENTS ON THE NEWS:
I know just how the prez of Honduras felt circling the airport in Honduras. How many times have I circled O'Hare Airport in Chicago, waiting for my plane to be able to land.
The riots in China seem surreal to me. This has not been my image of China in this century. I thot they had put down all the insurgents.

I took a nap. Sewing, reading.

Blitzen's Tale
Nothing to say. Just another day. I didn't even run very much at the park.

Just another day.

BOOK REVIEW
Linda Ladd *Head to Head*
I thought this was a police procedural until I was well into the book. [Martha said I was naive. The first sentence on the cover gave it away.] The publisher calls this a contemporary suspense thriller. In this case the sheriff's deputy was deep into the suspense. I dont care for thrillers bc the protagonist is involved in the case. Classic mysteries and police procedurals have the protagonist at a distance from the crime.
I lost my disbelief as the novel climbed to a climax. The serial killer decapitated victims and exchanged head with bodies. Furthermore, the FBI was not involved.

CORRECTION: Ray's dogs are Charlie and Maggie

Our Sunday School teacher is David Grebel, who is also head of Adult Ed at TCU -- or whatever TCU calls it.

At Michigan State it was called Continuing Education. David is a retired Baptist preacher. The Sunday School class is full of retired preachers and seminary grads. Highly intellectually stimulating.
David: what is it called, that list of texts for preachers. Is it lectionary?

Monday morning. I set the alarm and we were at dog park by 9 AM. Most of the time we were the only dogs there on either side. Eventually people came with a baby and Blitzen loves babies. He wouldn't leave the baby to come home.

Then I scurried over to Wendy's to meet Judy. Ken joined us for lunch. I discovered that at one time Judy was "collecting" stray cats. She is a recovering collector.
Yesterday Judy had a big fight with her sister over the phone about health care costs. Judy sounds like jeff, talking about hidden costs of Emergency Rooms.

Came home. 2 PM Took a nap. 3 PM UPS man arrived with present from sister, Persis. four pears, cheese and crackers. Had a cheese and crackers snack. Back to bed.
5 PM Oda Mae from next door arrived with hot corn bread and bean soup.
I am still sleepy. 6 PM I need to do some sewing. Instead I took another nap. Two hours. At 8 the dogs I insisted that I get up. I dont know why I am so sleepy.

And I dont hurt anywhere in my body. A cool breeze is blowing tonight. Finally. 86 degrees.

BOOK REVIEW
Harold Coyle, *
Coyle is a genre unto himself. he is a historian of the future. In this book he takes robot tanks being tested by the US Army and drives them into battle. A rogue tank runs away, resulting in a friendly fire incident. Our hero is sent from the Pentagon (his fa was a legendary tank general) to investigate the incident. Pressure is strong bc the victims are supporting Iraqi troops. The rogue tank failed to recognize a "friendly" sign.

Coyle points out something I have mentioned before. Playing video games is perfect training for controling robots. Eric Ericson said that the toys and games of children prepare them for adult roles.

The Case of the Dueling Sunday School Classes
Classes were divided into two teams to raise money for VanZandt Xmas Store. [Broadway sets up a store for kids in Van Z elementary school to "buy" presents for family. Broadway has adoped Van Z.]
Well, the losing team has to bring breakfast for winning team. That is thi morning. I am on winning team altho I did nothing. Gotta be there early by 9 AM.

Oh, my. It was a long table with varous scrambled eggs, burrito, seventeen different kinds of sweet rolls. fruit. Stuffed I wended my way to class. We studied the text the preacher preached on. Made it more meaningful. Text from Corinthians about Paul and the thorn in his side. New pastor. Good sermon. He has such a nice tone of voice.
Lunch in fellowship hall. Various people presented skits to welcome the new pastor. Broadway has some talented and sophisticated members. David M is in my Sunday School class and he is fantastic. (He is reading this.) David, I finally figured out "stole man". It took a while.

Mark F is a frequenter of our fellowship table. Missed you, Mark. Mark is a long haul truck driver.

Martha picked me up and I spent aft and evening there. First I took a long nap, two hours. Then Jeff and I ranted and raved about health care while Martha finished up some report. We had grilled pork roast. Then Josh and Michelle came home. Josh is M's son and Michelle is his girl friend. Shay came over, another friend of Josh. Josh is a back waiter at JF Chang's. He brot home a recipe for watermelon drink. Ymmy. Michelle works as a personal trainer.

Lady Chica's Tale
Mom left us alone all day and it was cooler and we never got to go to the park.

Blitzen's Tale
Yeah, Mom is neglectful. I may turn her in to Child Protective Services.

Fourth of July 2009

FOURTH OF JULY
And I am not going outdoors all day save for a brief dog walk. I feel energetic this morning. I think the ozone alert has gone down. The morning is so quiet. The dogs have not barked and it si 10:30 AM.

The dogs did not bark until after noon. I have taken two naps this afternoon. At 4:37 PM temp was 101 and Realfeel was 108. I have at least tidied up my linen closet. That is no small thing.

We went to the dog park at seven. (At 9 the temp is still 99 degrees.) It was pleasant in the shade. Ray was there. Ray is 66, retired long haul driver, a stereotypical good ol boy, self described racist, who comes to the park every day with Charlie and Sadie, two dachsunds. Tonight he also was baby sitting Heidi whose Mom has gone to Ireland.
He called fire dept when some kids were setting off fire works in a dry field. Everybody thanked him. Richland Hills has called off fireworks, I think. drought

Lady Chica's Tale
By the time Buddy got there tonight I was all tuckered out. Some folks were making noises in the field and some of us were scared. One mom carried her great big hound dog.

Blitzen's Tale
Noise dont scare me. I really raced tonight. Pretty good for an old boy like me. I like Ray. I give him a snoozle every time I see him.

BOOK REVIEW
Laura Childs, *Oolong Dead*
Chick book, subgenre recipes included. Theodosia Browning owns the Indigo Tea Room, serving real tea. As usual she finds a dead body, the sister of a former boy friend. Interesting find. She is on a jump race (like Dick Francis) when her horse shies and throws her. The body is up against a hurdle.
After many an adventure she locates the killer.
Fun read if you are into this genre.

At 9 AM I made a forced march sans dogs -- I lasted five minutes before hips cramped. My goal is to make it 30 minutes. I am not taking dogs out until lawn mowers leave. I cant handle Blitzen.

_____________________ is my neighbor across the central pathway. (I cant think of her name at 9:30)
She came by bringing hot muffins and a strip of bacon for breakfast.

I am determined to sew, sew, sew.

Well, I have done quite a bit today. Took a long nap. Sewing more. it is rather boring to sew strips and press and pin and sew and press and pin. Making log cabin blocks, 45 of them. Some finished.

At seven we made a library run then went to dog park. Buddy, Chica's friend, a nondescript generic dog, barked and barked for Lady Chica to race him, but she wouldn't run. Finally she did one race up and back along the fence. Several big dogs barked and barked, but my dogs would not run. They just lay around.

I may give Blitzen too much credit. (Oh, no my readers say!!!) I turned on the telly to watch MI5 and he barked and barked. Finally he went in and hid under the bed. Two minutes before the show ended he was out barking again. I think he has figured out one hour. Dogs have a strange sense of time. I have watched MI5 for several weeks, and it is always one hour.

Lady Chica's Tale
Well, Buddy was at the park tonight but it was too hot to be running. Lots of people on the big dog side know my name. Amazing, isn't it?

Blitzen's Tale
Mom watched that blasted television tonight. I hate that sucker. I dont know what she gets out of it. It just makes noise.

BOOK REVIEW
Ted Conover, *Coyotes*
The years are 1984-1985. Conover traveled for a year with illegal Mexican immigrants. He went to Phoenix and came to know some. Then they flew to Los Angeles. This chapter is a hoot. The Mexicans have no idea what they are doing as Teodoro guides them through the airports. Then Ted goes to Florida. He works with the men. He says picking oranges is skilled labor when you have to pick enough to make a living. He goes down into Mexico and drives a truck for four months. Then he crosses the border with a group. The illegals are caught by la Migra and deported. Ted then goes home.

Coyotes are the men who smuggle illegals across the border and give them rides to the farms where they will be working.
